I was playing through The Surge in anticipation for the sequel and man, that game just kind of peters out at the end. The final boss is super underwhelming and extremely easy to beat and they do a pretty poor job of signposting that it is the end of the game. Especially since there are multiple endings and if you beat the game you have to play through the entire thing all over again to get the other ending.

I don't know if this really counts as a drag-down, but I'm mildly interested in playing RimWorld for the first time in ages, but the only thing that is stopping me is that I've long since forgot the (small) amount of mods I used for it.

I could look up the thread here, or whatever, but... eh.

This is another sub-complaint, this time about soldier potentials. My main problem with them is what sometimes it seems to me a specific person's inherent potentials (as opposed to those they gain through training) says about what the game devs think about different people (and Raz being Raz bolsters that view I have about them IMO), but this specific complaint is about a much littler thing related to that.

One of the soldiers you get has the potential "Pacifist", which means when they kill a person there's a chance their AP (movement points basically) will go down. It's actually a minor thing IMO since I didn't notice it cut down the AP by much, though who knows maybe the cut is random and it can zero out their AP from full sometimes. Anyway that's really besides the point, I actually don't have a problem with the potentials in regards to their gameplay effects.

My problem here is that when a soldier kills an enemy sometimes there's a close in on their faces as they say some quip. When this soldier kills a person they're smiling and saying 'rest in peace' in a relatively upbeat tone, which is not at all how I'd expect a pacifist to act after killing someone, even if the debuff doesn't happen.

Another soldier who's generally super-cheerful and way too naive/optimistic on the other hand, when she gets that close-up she goes 'so this is war' and actually has a serious face when usually she's all non-stop smiles. So obviously they weren't forced to make everyone be smiling in those close-ups.

Most hockey and soccer teams everywhere have three jerseys A) home colors which are usually light B) away colors which are the actual team colors and C) third jersey which is either classic model with some other color than the second one or "rainbow vomit"-colored.

The third option exists to avoid matches where the are, for example, red-white team playing against white-red team.

I don't think Namco actually know how to pick guest characters for their fighting games, nor have they ever known. And that really hurts Soul Calibur.

Something that I think always let Soul Calibur stand out from the rest of the bigger fighting game franchises, especially back in The Day, was that it's got some dignity and self-seriousness to it. It's trying to have a strong setting and story going on (part of why it had so many good single-player modes over the years), and it manages to have that without any really dumb poo poo you have to acknowledge that other fighting games have (you can't take Street Fighter very seriously for example, because it's always a world with Blanka in it). But that falls apart almost every time they've added guest characters, because they almost all make a huge mess of an otherwise pretty logically and thematically consistent world.

It's not often easy to get a guest character that 100% matches the world of Soul Calibur, because it is kinda singular, which is why the few times they've done it genuinely feel like reasons to applaud: Ezio fit perfectly into Soul Calibur 5, and they just announced Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown as DLC for 6. But beyond those two it starts becoming clear that they never really ask 'does this character fit into our game's world', they just do it. If you're lucky that gets you someone who's a little weird, and it's a bit of a stretch to get them there, but at least sorta fits the vibe; Geralt in 6, Heihachi in 2, Spawn if you'll forgive the out-of-place aesthetics. But then, even beyond that, you've got characters that make zero sense and don't fit at all into the setting: 4's Star Wars characters are the most obvious, but 2B in 6 is right there with them, and personally I think stretches believability just a little too far with both the 'other dimensions exist apparently' and his hyperspace arsenal moveset combined. Apparently Heihachi was added into 2 after a deal for Cloud Strife fell through, he would've landed square in the 'irreconcilable' list too.

Namco clearly don't really care about getting characters that fit, or else we'd have more than only two that do. Tekken's got a lot of these problems going on as well, but Tekken's always been intentionally pretty laughable; you can complain all you want that Negan or Noctis don't really make sense, but this is a series that has several characters who are just bears, so it was never a place for serious discussion. Soul Calibur really tries to be taken largely seriously, though, only to have Darth Vader dropped into its lap to ruin that. I actually like a lot of those weirder guest characters--I bought 2 back when I was a kid because of Link, and I bought 6 now because of 2B. But they really aren't helping the game in any way but sales.

EDIT: I checked, I talked about mostly the same thing before, but it's still a problem god damnit!

Link in the Gamecube version was amazingly dumb and owned. Otherwise, I tend to agree. I mean let's not pretend like guest characters aren't 100% marketing all the time but Soul Calibur's have always been a bit too transparently so.

e: some licensing genius should just make All The Characters From All Of Media Come In With Everything For A Huge Fighting Game, and then have like Ryu and Sub-Zero and Mitsurugi as DLC guest characters.

See, Voldo's kind of interesting in that while they're certainly aware that Voldo's bizarre and hilarious, his treatment in the story is more illustrating that he's creepy, unnatural and also kinda sad. The game actually does take him, mostly, seriously.

Saints Row characters would be right at home in Tekken, I think. Tekken's always been a weird and permissive setting where basically anything goes.

If you're going to throw portals and other dimensions into the mix, I think an ideal guest for Soul Calibur would be Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy. He's right in line with the more loud and brash characters like Rock or Olcadan, and he's usually just using regular medieval weaponry. I could also see one of Fire Emblem's more iconic heroes (probably Marth), maybe the Demi-Fiend from Shin Megami Tensei but you'd have to play those cards carefully.

Basically, yes. Noctis is the star of collabs right now, but I'd expect that star to fade soon. Either to be replaced by someone from an eventual FFXVI, the old classic of Cloud, or maybe someone from XIV if it keeps on top of its game.

Y'shtola's been the face of the game in crossovers to date, but she doesn't fit every game. She's a dedicated spellcaster, for most of the game's run a healer at that and only in the new expansion does she switch to an offensive spellcaster.

It's kind of odd, these days the heroes' aggressive, kinda dim bruiser character is a teenage girl with a magic rapier.
