I remember there was some theorizing a few years ago that chan sites were useful to the Feds because the way they hosted both blatantly illegal material and hackers/Anonymous types increased the chances that some of the latter would be caught downloading or posting some of the former. So if the Feds were even able to turn just one member of some hacking group into an informant, they would be able to roll up the rest of the group relatively easily, or direct the actions of the group towards targets they dislike. Like encouraging them do Anonymous branded campaigns against US enemies like Libya or Syria, instead of Bank of America. Of course this was from the twitter posters who were deep into "Domestic Gladio" conspiracies, and I don't remember any evidence to back it up.
