Cool command line tip: setting the DOOMWADDIR environment variable makes it so you can keep all of your WADs in one place but still easily launch them from several different source ports without having to use the full path every time. Also makes it so that if you reorganize things later you can just update the path in the variable instead of having to edit any batch files you may have made.

It just feels so wrong to not get dropped back to a command prompt when I exit Doom to change WADs.

Alright, cleared Verdant Citadel:

Spectacular map, in terms of how well it uses its non-linearity, to say nothing of its visuals. Pretty breezy in terms of difficulty, though that's not a bad thing at all; the only times I really felt threatened during the run was when I went into the well, and on the final floor of the elevator fight (the relative lack of cover in that fight forced me into a corner, which I actually liked). Managed to get through the whole thing without dying, regardless. Certainly a map very generous with its ammo and health, and that's without finding even half of the secrets available. Only a couple real quibbles I can think of. First, as noted before, the music stood out as incongruous with the rest of the map. This was certainly a map that could've gone with some upbeat tracker music, rather than buttmetal. Secondly, the ending was a little abrupt. I would've at least liked to get closer to the cave's exit before it faded to black!

Finished VC again. The non-linearity and spacing of the map to allow me to maneuver to defeat large groups of enemies was why I really liked this map. Although the first time I played I didn't get the SSG until near the end which made things much harder for me. The elevator ride was a highlight along with that tunnel area with the plasma gun. On second play I did notice that the music was a little too heavy especially once you went back to areas already cleared.

:siren: ITS VOTING TIME :siren:

Five options, you can vote for any and all that you would want to play. You could vote for the one map you want the most, or the few that you prefer to the others.
If we have a tie I'll select randomly from those with the most votes.

https://www.strawpoll.me/18424153

In addition, we will continue to have bonus single map wads every weekend.

Sunlust
Nominated by: Einwand, others
32-map Doom 2 megawad designed to be played from pistol start. This mod received one of the 2015 Cacowards on Doomworld and features a custom soundtrack.

Ancient Aliens
Nominated by: Zaphod42
32-map Doom 2 megawad with lots of custom textures and strong themes. This mod received one of the 2016 Cacowards. It is a parody of alien conspiracy theories, particularly those from the TV show of the same name. The WAD features a large range of custom textures and a new palette allowing for radically different visual styles to what is usually seen in PWADs.

Stardate 20X6
Nominated by: Einwand

8 doom2 maps focusing on the color purple, because most maps don't! The levels meander through underground and space-station themes, and are filled with all sorts of abstract violet goodness. Much of the gameplay resembles the arena style typically found in slaughtermaps, but the monster counts (in general) aren't overwhelmingly high.

Rush
Nominated by: DisDisDis

Set of 12 doom2 slaughterish maps. Blast through tech bases, winter maps, hellish keeps and structures in the Void. Good introduction to slaughtermaps.

I couldn't find screenshots of this map so I just downloaded it and played through the first map and it was both really cool looking and also pretty fun to blast through!

Going Down
Nominated by: Dieting Hippo

32-level megawad for Doom II released by Cyriak, featuring its own original soundtrack by the same author and a custom DeHackEd boss monster. This mod received one of the 2014 Cacowards. Absolute insanity, some of the craziest poo poo I've seen in Doom wads, as you would expect from loving Cyriak.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE

Whatever we don't select will go back into the WAD hopper and will show up again.

But ZDL does work with GZDoom 4 64-bit latest build and Verdant Citadel for me.

Yup, sorted out the filenames. Spectacular map, it's shockingly beautiful (though I can probably count on one hand the custom Doom maps I've played in my life, so this thread is definitely opening up a new world). Cyberdemon probably killed me at least 15 times, but that's just lack of zigzagging expertise. HMP was just the right difficulty for me.

I vote Sunlust.

I'll vouch for Ancient Aliens and Going Down for anyone who's on the fence about voting for those. They are top-tier and I wouldn't mind giving either of them another go if they win.

Edit: It was a close match between Sunlust and Stardate 20X6 for me. The aesthetics of 20X6 are just beautiful but I'm weary of the "almost like a slaughtermap" description.

People voting for Sunlust should know that it's a full megawad of slaughtermaps. Starbase and Rush are also pretty slaughter-y, so this is a fairly high-octane set of maps all told.

I’m honestly really surprised to see it pop up so early in the club’s run. It’s a megawad I’ve been wanting to play for ages, but I haven’t felt capable enough to try it out. I’m worried it would be offputting to newer/less experienced doomers (that said, it does have difficulty setting support).

Also, finished VC on Ultra-Violence. It was a great map, and just when I thought I didn't know where to go I'd see monsters walk out from a new area. I forgot I had the orange key when I was dropping off the purple one but thankfully I used the orange spot anyway. Only died 2 times and thought it was fair the whole time.

Count me in for Sunlust, Ancient Aliens is incredible but I haven't finished it yet so now might be the perfect time

Finished Verdant Citadel, what a wild ride, 9/10

A pretty good challenge on UV, this map had a ton of interesting encounters and I ate poo poo to that Cyberdemon a few times trying to bait him into infighting, and I just barely squeezed by with the Archvile toward the end. That elevator at the end was a cool touch and that music was dope. Great architecture with some Quake-like halls and poo poo, and it was tense running into monsters just following you all over the place. One hell of a good level.

You are the one "winning" for now, in the needed time for the run.
Also, watching your video made me wonder. Why do you use with the bottom bar? It's nicer to play totally full screen with the info on the corners. And I would use Smooth Doom in wads like this, that doesn't have any new weapons or monsters.

haha, yeah I know, fullscreen is nice but it's hard to explain - without Doomguy mean muggin all the time and those classic numbers and stuff, it just doesn't feel like Doom enough to me. I occasionally go fullscreen but ehhhh, part of the appeal of playing Doom is the familiar stuff and the old-school status bar at a small size works for me. it would be cool to have it so the classic bar is still there, but maybe the border on both sides was removed?

I would use SmoothDoom but I use the neural network upscale addon and having that beautiful extra detail on monsters and stuff is too good for me to pass up

Why do we have so many difficult mapsets in the poll already, I thought we were going for a more gentle introduction for anyone new to Doom WADs :psyduck:

Anyways, I voted for Rush, since it's a relatively gentle introduction to slaughter gameplay.

EDIT: Also, while I'm at it, a few more recommendations for later polls:

Jade Earth: The mother of all adventure maps. If you thought Verdant Citadel was long, wait until you get a load of this.

The Quirky Domain: Hey, do you like portals? Because FishyClockwork here looooooooooves portals.

Dimension of the Boomed: This is what you get when you mix Quake with Doom. Unlike the previous recs, this is a 7 map episode.

Game Over
Return of Mido

Surprised to see Sunlust, Ancient Aliens and Going Down all in the poll because they're all pretty difficult packs. I remember trying Sunlust a few years back and playing in multi, probably on HMP, and it got to slaughter levels of enemies pretty fast, to the point where we were basically just using BFG the whole time to cut through waves. And this was with respawning ammo too. It was neat, but definitely going to be a big step up in difficulty over Sigil. If I remember correctly, even Hey Not Too Rough spawns cyberdemons as early as map 8.

Going Down is an awesome pack but it definitely gets hard fast. I played it again recently but stopped when I got to a map over halfway through where you have to push a plunger to blow up a wall, waking up every enemy in the map and letting them swarm you. Even with lots of ammo, armor and health I couldn't get myself through safely so I stopped. Not opposed to going through again but once more, a decent step up in difficulty from Sigil.

Ancient Aliens has a really cool everything about it and I don't remember it being ridiculously tough, though I know I didn't finish it. Definitely challenging and worth checking out. I think you need to use Hardware Acceleration for it because I recall some invisible textures and collision until I swapped around some video settings.

I'm more interested in the other two because I haven't played them but that's just me. I'm willing to go back and give any and all of these choices another shot. Let's just be careful about jumping too far into the deep end yet.

Yeah jumping right into the deep end with stuff like Sunlust could be discouraging more than anything for newer players. Also I don't know how much free time people have but if we're doing one wad a week then finishing 32 levels in that time may not be feasible for a lot of people.

I am also pretty drat surprised AA, GD and Sunlust are all in the same voting list... that seems like an odd decision for the first round.

Although I've played AA and GD before, they were with DRLA cranking the insanity up to 11; a vanilla playthrough of either should be a blast.

Maybe monthly megawads and weekly episode length wads could help people overcome some of the intense challenges presented in this voting list.
