That would be like a bunch of Black Lives Matter guys spending time and taking direction from the ministry of foreign affairs right? Or #BLM being sponsored by millions of confucius institute dollars?

I don't get it, so protesting is bad and the extradition bill is....good? Like, China in no way has a just and impartial legal system, my daughter is a native HK'er so I feel very invested in the outcome of all this. Yeah a lot of people in the rural villages have been lifted above an arbitrary poverty line but they are still extremely poor and live in fear of getting an illness they can't afford to treat while officials and well connected business execs are all ridiculously, unimaginably wealthy in comparison. Oh, and the less well connected business execs languish in prison without a trial or recourse to a lawyer. I have yet to see anyone produce an actual defence of the Chinese legal system, which might be pertinent in this debate?

Rabelais D posted:I don't get it, so protesting is bad and the extradition bill is....good? just because the protesters aren't literally all CIA operatives doesn't mean that there aren't opportunist elements within the movement, and just because the protesters have a legitimate cause doesn't mean that the media narrative being shaped by the West isn't being crafted by those who have an interest in stirring up enmity against China for reasons far beyond caring about HK's legal system and extradition laws

lol, thanks for reminding me EDIT - that was referring to the post defending glorious Xi's soon to be socialist state. I mean yeah there's good and bad elements, it's a mass protest, but the point is people don't want to be beholden to an arbitrary self-serving legal system Rabelais D has issued a correction as of 05:16 on Aug 6, 2019 |

Rabelais D posted:I don't get it, so protesting is bad and the extradition bill is....good? Like, China in no way has a just and impartial legal system, my daughter is a native HK'er so I feel very invested in the outcome of all this. the serious answer is, there's not enough legal safety measures put in place in the current "dead" bill to give power to the judges to investigate the circumstances surrounding a potential extradition to china. there are measures to prevent political prisoners from being extradited, but is that really going to stop them from disappearing them with another excuse? there have also been politicians being pragmatic and trying other solutions to resolve the situation that arose to warrant the need for this bill, but carrie "always listening" lam has decided to do it her own way instead. and now instead of officially withdrawing it she is just setting the cops free to do whatever they want without accountability til she can wait out the tide and attempt to pass the bill when the movement dies out i think caberham has been doing a better job at following and explaining this but instead of an actual discussion the commie sympathizers drown out the thread with twitter posts highlighting specific cases of protester violence while ignoring the many cases of cop violence, or using GBS as a pejorative 20 years after the forums inception. BREAKING: Democracy-loving protesters in HK harness the power of love
|
# ? Aug 6, 2019 05:36 |

It should be obvious by now that there will be foreign attempts to take leadership of any major protesting mood, from fake social media accounts to commanding a hard core of ultra-militant protestors to bribing people to provoke protesters. Basically there's no guarantee that the white shirts beating up protesters were bribed by Hong Kong or Chinese authorities in the first place. The whole white shirt, black shirt thing could be a designed choreography if there ends up being a relatively small amount of blackshirts in truth and they differ in their methods from the majority of the protestors. Foreign aims don't need to be as high as regime change or separatism, they can be just to provoke China into very publicly humiliating itself, although that'd probably be reflected in the budget. People being good and mobilized by legitimate grievances doesn't mean their leadership is. They could be provoking the authorities into oppressive measures just to produce a more violent mood, and it's good if authorities stay on the defensive (assuming they aren't already on a serious shadow offensive through utilizing organized crime). I don't mean that I exactly believe in the conspiracy theory I just made up, I mean that making your minds up and becoming really invested into the success of some "good guys" while the thing is still ongoing can end up in humiliation. It's better to become invested in some correct aims that the protests express and recognize if they get thrown on the wayside for something else, if the spontaneous leadership changes or vacillates. And if you, like me, don't know enough about the place that you could really tell, it's better not to get too invested on sides in the chaotic, unstructured phase. You wouldn't want to be cheerleading for just anyone that put on a yellow vest in France either, when there have been a lot of sides fighting for leadership there, including fascists and antifascists.

It's going to be one country one system after 2047. Move out if you don't want to live under China's legal system. The first thing China will get rid of are the foreign citizen judges in HK. I am not going to produce a defense for Chinese legal system, I mean it's not fair under western value but it's fair according to confucianism value but you made up your mind already.

pretty sure all the foreign judges will have retired or died out by then not exactly sure what is fair about confucianisms "get old then people will listen to you, otherwise listen to me" values but everyone has the right to their opinions, to me it's as outdated as the indian caste system

tino posted:it's fair according to confucianism value Well I don't know can you point to anything in the Confucian / neo Confucian / legalist canon that suggests that it is fair to use the legal system to maintain a corrupt bureaucracy Like my friend's family was told he could have seen a lawyer if he had produced 1 million RMB in a red packet but they didn't have the money and he's still languishing in a Guangdong jail and meanwhile his son now thinks he's dead

Lady Galaga posted:pretty sure all the foreign judges will have retired or died out by then Confucianism basically developed to be the ideology of the tributary Chinese society the same way as Catholicism developed to be that for tributary European societies. It's not meant to be fair, it's meant to justify why things are as they are. So obviously conservatives try to breathe new life into it.

Chinese legal system doesn't rely heavily on lawyer anyway. If you are going to spend the money to get him out dont spend it on lawyers.
