An entire industry has existed for several decades designed to pump out conspiracy theories specifically about the Clintons murdering people. Yeah but is it fast enough

I've seen these curves before. In 2008 the insurgent (Obama) curve increased fast enough and the establishment (Clinton) curve decreased fast enough that the insurgent won. In 2016, they didn't, and then we know what happened in the general.

Here we've got two dinky curves and they seem to be increasing slowly, while Biden's polling isn't collapsing nearly as quickly as his brainmeat.

Its really hard to even get a good sense of the debates with the current clown car. I get that the DNC is trying to avoid looking like they're playing any kind of favorites, but can we cut it down to like 7 or 8 people for the next debate?

They have to keep open the option of the also-ran grifters (looking at delaney and ryan most of all) to turn into attack dogs to get rid of whomever the establishment doesn't want. Or at least let the free market of megadonors make that decision.

Obama's (and Hillary's) numbers barely moved throughout 2007. The tide didn't even begin to shift until January of 2008 and he didn't even start to regularly lead in the polls until after his Iowa Caucus win.

The DNC's rules should narrow the field significantly going into the next debate. I believe they need a certain number of donors and something like 3% support in at least 3 national polls to qualify. That eliminates like half the field. And as long as there are under 12 candidates, they'll all be on the same stage. As of now I think only 7 or 8 qualify for the next debate and I don't see how some people are gonna hit those polling numbers if they didn't after last week's debates.

Interesting demographic trivia:
  • As usual, Quinnipiac doesn't reveal any info on the composition of their sample. However, the fact that the only racial demographics listed are "Wht" and "Blk" suggests it's not particularly diverse. Additionally, the "has a college degree" and "doesn't have a college degree" groups are white-only.
  • Only two candidates with over 4% support got a higher proportion of black support than white support. Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
  • Warren's standings are equal to Bernie's among people under age 50. Her lead over him comes exclusively from having won over older voters, being the only candidate besides Biden to get double-digit support from the 50-64 and 65+ age brackets.
  • Sanders has much more support among the poor than among the rich. Buttigieg and Harris have much more support among the rich than among the poor. Biden and Warren's support is pretty much even among income brackets right now.
  • People who watched the debate had a much different impression of it than people who didn't watch it but did follow the news coverage afterward. Interestingly, people who skipped the debates and listened to punditry's takes instead tended to rate Biden much lower and Sanders much higher. And people who didn't pay attention to either the debates or the news coverage had a drastically worse opinion of Warren.
  • For the question "which candidate do you think has the best policy ideas?", Warren was ranked most highly by a whopping 32%, while Sanders and Biden tied for second with about 16% each. The richer demographics were more likely to think Warren had the best ideas, the poorest demographics preferred Bernie's policy ideas, and Biden's policies had about the same level of support from all income brackets.
  • Half of respondents thought that Biden had the best chance of winning against Donald Trump. The candidate perceived as second most electable was Bernie Sanders. Warren was third most electable, while Harris was fourth most electable. Beto was perceived as fifth most electable, while everyone else (including Buttigieg) had 1% or fewer of respondents thinking they were electable. People who watched the debate were more likely to think Biden was electable than people who didn't. :psyduck: If you're wondering why the hell people who watched the debate loved Biden and hated Sanders, hold off on your "I guess the voters were just stupid" takes for just a couple more bullet points.
  • Given a choice between "a candidate who shares your views" and "the candidate who's most electable", most demographics were about evenly split between the two choices, or slightly in favor of "shares your views". However, whites, men, conservatives, older people, people with college degrees, and the rich all went overwhelmingly for "most electable". :thunk: Also, people who watched the debates were far more likely to opt for "more electable".
  • Older, whiter, and more conservative Dems were most likely to watch the debate itself, by a fair margin. Only two groups were more likely to watch the debate than to skip it and follow the news coverage afterwards: people over age 65 and whites who didn't have a college degree. Liberals, whites with college degrees, and Gen Xers mostly didn't watch the debate but did follow the news coverage. Millennials, poor people, black people, and Dem-leaning independents were all more likely to ignore the debates and debate coverage altogether.
