very disappointed in myself today

i told my boss i wanted to leave an hour early so i skipped lunch and she said that was fine

then at 3:30 a switch blew out and i was at work till 5:30 getting everything back online. Not only did I not leave an hour an early, but I skipped lunch for nothing which means I worked 90 minutes more then was required. Oh well, I'm sure my boss will recognize my sacrifice and reward me appropriately.

Monsanto ran a psy-ops war-room to discredit journalists and spy on Neil Young
https://boingboing.net/2019/08/08/needle-n-the-damage-done.html

quote:

Monsanto ran a "fusion center" (a term borrowed from law-enforcement counter-terrorism operations) that spied on activists and journalists who were investigating the safety of its products, notably the link between its "Round Up" pesticides and cancers.

The Guardian reports on internal records that it obtained from the center's operations from 2015-2017, which document the company's "multi-pronged" plan to discredit Reuters journalist Carey Gillam ahead of the publication of Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer, and the Corruption of Science, her book on the subject, in which the company drafted "third party talking points" to be fed to people who were not publicly associated with the company, who could then repeat the points in the press as though they had come from disinterested parties.

The company also bought Google ads targeted against Gillam's name that redirected searchers to smear pages.

The memos reveal that the company spied on Canadian folk legend Neil Young and contemplated how they could neutralize his environmental activism, including an aborted plan to sue him. They also targeted the US nonprofit US Right to Know, with weekly reports for execs on the organization's activities.

The documents reveal that company's top execs fretted that any disclosure of the firm's financial relationship with supposedly neutral scientists could be a source of scandal.

Monsanto was acquired by German chemical giant Bayer in 2018, after which the new owners retired the "Monsanto" name, believing it to be in worse public odor than "Bayer," a company notorious for having manufactured the poison gas used to murder millions of Jews and others in Nazi death camps.

I don't know if I imagined it or not but it seemed like this time Trump n' pals went for the violent videogames angle but then absolutely nobody bought it so he went back to hounding on mental health and building asylums.

Which is one of those arguments that's really hard to convince people is bullshit unfortunately, even people who should really know better. After all, if you use a gun to murder a bunch of people, you must be crazy, because that is a crazy thing to do, so by definition you're crazy and if we just lock up all the crazy people it won't happen.

Ok wait I went to Billionaire Magazine's website and it sounds fun

quote:

WHAT IS BILLIONAIRE MAGAZINE?
BILLIONAIRE is an award-winning magazine not available on newsstands, but offered to a distinguished group of the most powerful, influential, high net worth readers across the world. Join them to receive special subscriber-only invitations.

We go the extra mile to report on important topics such as the future of technology, world health, philanthropy and humanitarian work. We bring you incredible travel experiences, the very best in elegant living, the arts, culture and craftsmanship. We exclusively interview some of the world’s most illustrious billionaires, from Ted Turner to Nicky Oppenheimer to Joe Gebbia to Mo Ibrahim, about the problems keeping them up at night, their passions and projects. We speak to some of the planet’s most inspiring change-makers, from Jimmy Carter to Buzz Aldrin to Kofi Annan, about their visions for the future and how they are making the world a better place.

Each quarterly issue of BILLIONAIRE is carefully curated with unique content that other magazines simply do not offer.

Ok so it's for single-digit-millionaires to read to feel better about themselves and like they're a member of an exclusive club. Also as far as I can tell you can just read it all for free online so I'm not sure what the point is.

Looking at the articles, they don't even write all of them, they aggregate them from other pretending-to-be-rich idiot sources:

They'll never restrict video games because the MIC gets it's meat from kids who join the military.

In the 90's it was a pretty in depth process to teach new Soldiers how to aim their weapons (what the sight picture is supposed to look like, etc), but it's easy as hell these days because they've all seen exactly what it looks like to aim down a rifle at a person a million times.

Also, they're very excited to get their hands on the real versions of their favorite video game weapon.
