"Zero system level features" (?) was a specific choice. The entire OS is compressed to a few hundred kb and prioritizes fast loading to get you into the game in a fraction of a second. If you've ever used the Xbox One you'll understand why this is especially important for something like the Switch.

I find it safer just to add grip tape to the plastic ones that are included, though I agree they are terrible and it'd be nice if they could at least taper them. The problem is just most custom ones are weighted for arcade usage, which the lovely home taikos can't hold up to. I mean, they can't hold up to anything anyway and usually end up falling apart (I no joke have a bookshelf with five WiiU taikos in various states of functionality sitting behind me as I type this).
