the other example y'all are missing is the airport workers strike ending the US government shutdown

airports are a logistical hub, and one of the pressure points of capitalism. I'm not going to guess as to whether this is going to work out better or worse for the protesters, but it's going to bring things to a head either way

Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas?

I think he means tiny in a geographic sense

I think the protests are destined for failure and potential bloodshed by the HK cops for a couple reasons:

the long term plan from the Chinese government has been to make Shanghai the financial capital of China since the aughts, which ultimately requires the diminishment of Hong Kong as a financial hub, the chaos in HK advances this goal

the elites of HK desperately want to cling on to economic relevance to protect their capital interests, but they are also feeling pressure from Beijing to standardize law enforcement in HK to the PRC, so they are stuck in between the protesters and Beijing to protect their interests, which inevitably means that if the protests continue to be economically disruptive, live ammunition used by the cops is going to hit the streets soon

no ones ever really tried that except ows and that didnt work. occupying the airport worked in thailand. also the protestors arent commies, unfortunately.

Well people who argue the CCP "wouldn't dare to tank HK because its the biggest financial hub" should follow up with that thought and shut down the stock exchange. It actually interferes with the normal civilians the least.

Also are you calling Bane a communist?

"Dammit, they aren't coming to do business in Shanghai!"

"Should we do something about it?"

"You mean provide a stable environment for business with strong and reliable laws protecting trade?"

"No lol let's reeeeaaallly gently caress up our other trade hub, then people will obviously choose to come to another place we have even more control over!"

(A year later)

"What the gently caress is a 'Singapore'?"

HK has already been bleeding business to Singapore, and China doesn't get any of the taxes collected by Hong Kong, so they may view this as a cost to claiming fleeing capital from HK

The elites in Hong Kong are family owned real estate conglomerates with close ties to Chinese cities.

They have the same copy cat malls and stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and other cities.

Starbucks HK expanded into Starbucks guangzhou and Guangdong province through Maxim’s group.

The elites never cared about protesters because dual universal suffrage and removing functional constituencies will reduce the power of the elites. With a fairer and more democratic system focused on labour reform and social welfare policy, they can’t make as much money in the housing market and with the anti competition laws they would not make as much money with cartels.

Sponge bullets are deadly enough and scary enough.

What I find even scarier is the white terror of employers firing you for your political opinions like Cathay pacific.

schools are restricting teachers, hospitals restricting medical workers

Yeah Western tech companies left HK for SG like a decade ago at this point, nobody really thinks the mainland isn’t snooping on all the internet traffic going into/out of HK. HK is still big in finance but Singapore has grabbed all the money laundering..ahem, “private wealth management” business

Somebody give me the condensed woke socialist take on the Hong Kong protests.

I'm reading awful conflicting garbage and I've been away from the internet for 60+ hours.

I'm just now getting around to Dick Swett and a mosque shooter. I've missed a lot.

The Global Times guy had a brand new "I <3 Police" t shirt with him like it was some kind of gift. When he got rescued by the ambulance, a black shirt ran up and beat him on the stretcher with an american flag. Everything about this accident is so hilarious.
