OCS and server meshing are hosed and do not allow for more than a handful of players before everything goes to poo poo?

No problem. Just forget to purge the player name list and all of a sudden you will have hundreds of players in the same instance! Hundreds of thousands even! Promise fulfilled!

Now consider this.

The shield on a ship is modeled as a rough polygon that also servers as its hitbox. Then normal maps and other trickery is used to make it look properly round and poo poo. So sometimes your lasers seem to go thru the shield because they are not actually colliding with the hitbox underneath.

If what that shitizen is saying is true, then, with this new never-seen-before Super-Duper-Field tech is implemented (Logical Chimp: It's probably already implemented! it's just not active yet) then the "problem" I mentioned will be fixed and your client will properly display the collision between your beam and the shield... even in those cases when they are not actually colliding with the hitbox. So it will look like you're doing damage to the shields but you're actually missing them, doing nothing. UNLESS... they also use SDF server-side. Once SSOCS is done I'm sure the servers will have all the resources required to compute the hit detection on extremely complex meshes calculated on the fly. Things are looking good for the game, buy some ships!

I have to the same to you my friend, but that also is incorrect. Their actual expenses in their later years were "however much we made plus ten million". So, after buying a house and some extra perks those 46M will buy them a couple of extra years, tops.

* Today's episode will be about gameplay! Haha no, just kidding! It's about particle effects.
* Do you know what a "Signed Distance Field" is? Is this another thing we just invented, and it actually means "hitbox?" We'll never tell!
* Okay today's episode is literally about making the sparks bounce nicely. That's- that's it. They put this out with their heads held high.
* Oh good there's another segment. They sent their audio team to loving sweden to record... chemistry noises? Guess you couldn't get those anywhere else, foley guys? Hope you enjoyed your paid vacation.
* And of course the "Picture of a non-functional spaceship" segment at the end. Looks like those mysterious space gypsies are really into early-2000's spooky-organic alien architecture! An extremely generic design choice from the masterminds at CIG, who no doubt had to spend 6 months underwater studying dolphin loving or something to come up with it.

I would venture a guess that the Lead VFX Programmer whom I will now think of as Space Dust Simon is a Swede, judging by his pronounciation of 'g' and 'j'. It appears even my people have been stricken by this disease called Star Citizen development :negative:
Oh, and the audio team went to my area for chemical sounds? Surely there must be some lab in the UK, Germany or US that can do the same thing without all the travel expenses?

When I was but a young apprentice programmer, I was trying to figure out how installation and configuration of our game software should be done in Windows. After literally 30 seconds of extremely intense internet searching (I was too dumb to just ask someone), I turned up an actually extremely detailed document on Microsoft’s site describing very clearly and thoroughly how to install your software for any number of scenarios.

It’s a shame that information has been never been updated and is probably lost forever is what I’m saying.

Yeah it's essentially gibberish. I do a bit of 3d work as part of my job, I am not a specialist, and I don't work with real-time engines, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but yeah, this is just hilariously wrong.

The normal is just the direction perpendicular to the tangent of a polygon. a single-sided or double-sided polygon can have the exact same normal.

This is hard to unpack because he's conflating a bunch of things.

He's talking about baking normal maps from high poly sculpts and applying them to low poly game assets.

Then he's also talking about PBR shaders, which frequently involve normal maps, but they're a much wider topic and not relevant to collision detection. Neither are normal maps actually, lol.

Then he mentions bump maps, which are more primitive and probably aren't being used where normal maps are available.

By height maps I think he means displacement maps, which generally do the opposite of what he is describing – They take a low poly asset and subdivide it to yield a high poly asset. It's a bit (but not really) like a normal map in reverse. They could also take a flat mesh composed of many vertices and move those vertices along an axis, depending on what you're trying to do. But we're now getting closer to all of this having a point.

Ok, so now he's got his head straight about height maps or whatever, he's still using a very wonky definition of what a normal is, and I'm not sure why on gods green earth he keeps mentioning PBR shaders.

The rest is just.... yeah...Essentially, he's written an incredibly tortured explanation with a ton of irrelevant and just plain wrongs buzzwords to explain how CIG are piping meshes generated at run time into the collision system. I don't know why a collision system would be so broken at a fundamental level, either he's full of poo poo or CGI are idiots or all of the above. What a poo poo show.

Thank you for this detailed breakdown commando

I'm sorry ? I do not understand how what you're saying is different than what I said. "However we made plus 10M" is $35M+$10M = the $45M expenses number I mentionned ( +- a few millions, I don't have the exact numbers in mind ).

Also, 4 years from 2018 = 2022, we're already a year "in", so that's 3 years or funding more or less remaining at the current rate.

I think he means the gap may get bigger each year, decreasing the length of time the investment will give them. Add to that the house that was totally bought with the millions Roberts has the time may even be shortened more. But we all know there will be massive jpeg sales at the end of the year that will eclipse any prior!

It means that, if they got one hundred quadrillion dollars in 2018 their expenses would be one hundred quadrillion *and* ten million dollars.

That extra money they got from the investors? I'm pretty sure that it'll be invested judicio... hey! new house! what a coincidence.
