Pretty soon they're going to age out of development cycles to compare this mess to. I can't wait for, "Oh yeah? Well Dwarf Fortress has been in development for 18 years and people still pledge for that therefore everything is normal and my spaceships are coming for real."

When I think about the citcon demo we're going to get this year, I like to think back to the demo from 3 years ago and how far we've come since then. (Skip to 1hr:50min) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuDj5v81Nd0 *Working scopes *Crashed Javelin *Bandit barricades *Sprinting up an inclined surface without dying *Clouds in the background *Dust storms *Functional ground enemies with patrol route AI *Silent melee takedowns *Enemy biker gangs *Sandworms that were NOT a joke I mean, just think- three years on- and we're still able to dream about maybe someday seeing any one of those features! But they definitely, definitely were doing these demos from in-house stuff that they had almost-ready to go. It isn't practically a completely different engine, no sir. That's why they need to shut the whole loving operation down for 3 months in order to ramp things up- because they're working so hard to get the game build ready with lots of features that they will then release shortly afterwards. This post is from at least a year ago... found it randomly while searching for a thing. at what point does optimism turn into willful blindness and delusion? Probably a while back given CIG's promises.

I know game development is REALLY HARD but I didn't know it was 'maybe we can match goldeneye64 zoom' hard. Everytime they manage to add something it's like babby's first gamedev tutorial level of polish.

I'm not saying that with any sarcasm. The tutorial would literally end with "ok obviously you wouldn't zoom the whole screen but this is just a basic idea of how to get started"

The tutorial would literally end with "ok obviously you wouldn't zoom the whole screen but this is just a basic idea of how to get started" When I play a game where you zoom in and you can see the distorted reflection of what's behind you in the glass on the scope, I think "cool, this is game development. Nice touch." But zooming in the entire screen and just blacking out everything but the "scope," what the gently caress, and then in this case the "scope" is the only part you can't see through I mean poo poo. Really? And it looks to me like they're not even actually zooming in per se, but just magnifying what you can already see. Everything, EVERYTHING, in this loving "game," is an infant's interpretation of what games are. They look at real games, say "we can do that" and then they can't do that. So they imitate it clumsily and wrong. Sometimes I think the ludicrous prices in the shop are designed specifically to make it appear that the game is good, because everything you can experience proves the polar opposite. "This poo poo must be this expensive for a reason - we must be missing something. Better buy in!" Scruffpuff fucked around with this message at 20:51 on Aug 19, 2019 |

Aren't they effectively the same as the X3 menus? X3 ended up with an indexed menuing system that you could program as shortcuts to anything with a macro builder.

All of this is why I believe with 100% confidence that if we see anything on the citcon screen this year, it will not be by the company. And I really don't think they have many contractors willing to do work for them at this point. So I'm just unsure what it is they're gonna bring if anything.

They'll be roaming around the show floor of Gamescom giving out "exclusive swag". I love the idea of a bunch of CI(not G) employees are trying to hand out bags of crap while not actually having any other presence in the event, just aimlessly wandering around the place trying to look 'invited' while actual software developers are showing off their work on stages around them. How embarrasing.

I thought you were going to be showing the same thing. I wonder if they tried to fix that, and that's what happened. Or, maybe it's completely unrelated.

Rotten Red Rod posted:Why is this? If their money is good, why wouldn't contractors be willing to work for CIG? Did they do something to burn bridges? Oh, I mean, a little bit of a history * Crytek is currently suing them over the use of their engine, which they licensed for one game but used to make two, and then claimed they weren't actually using the engine at all because they were on "Lumberyard" while still showing bugsmasher videos of stuff that Crytek says was their code. * They also stole pretty much all of Crytek's senior engineering staff * Oh also did I mention that Crytek are the ones who made the demo that Crobberts used in the original Kickstarter video- they did all of that contingent on CIG using their engine. * Another developer was contracted to make the FPS module back in the dawn of development. They did the work and Crobberts sent it all back to them and told them to do it over again- then he went public and blamed them for the delays, saying they'd done everything to the wrong scale. Everything they did was used for demo videos and otherwise thrown away. * Turbulent is rumored to be the dev contracted for a lot of the more recent demo stuff. They're also rumored to be in litigation with CIG for non-payment. The online store, that they also maintain, is currently years out of date. * Chris famously threw a gigantic hissy fit at AMD- I can't remember the specifics but there was a letter that was absolutely bugnuts and basically ruined the relationship between the two companies, after CIG failed to send in demo reels or something on time. * CIG has a history of engaging in unbelievably poo poo hardware tie-in deals- joysticks, mice, VR rigs, face-tracking webcams- all of which inevitably fall through or never see the light of day. I mean, that might not actually burn a contractor bridge as long as everyone got paid, but it's just another big red flag. * Also not contractors but there are entire studios full of people who've quit CIG- famously the Austin studio that used to be the face of the company was all cut loose or departed to go make a garbage-tier Freespace clone, and in another famous incident the entire character creation team quit en-masse over terrible management decisions.
