Ok, this new Oasis is pretty cool. I like the hand feel and I like how I can switch hand to hand by turning it upside down.

It's weird that the top button advances the page rather than the bottom button but I understand why.

I have spent the whole weekend reorganizing my calibre library so I can do a "clean" import to the new kindle, rather than actually reading.

Pulled the trigger on the Boox Nova Pro. Chose it over the Note Pro because the smaller size will make it easier to throw in a bag, carry around. Will report back with how much I hate it.

I switched the buttons at first but it didn't take me long to realize the top button is way more comfortable to use to advance

Why would the Boox have issues following the ePub spec? Certainly haven't heard people complain about it with Boox in the past, and the ePub spec is very simple.

Loads of readers fail to follow the spec properly. In fact I know of zero that don’t have at least one weird quirk.

The Boox I had several years ago regarded the different weights of all fonts other than the default as separate fonts, so that changing your font meant you either got all italics or no italics.

Oasis 3 came today. Initial impressions are very positive. The screen brightness looks to be completely uniform. I've heard people complain about that with some kindles before. The warm light feature seems like it will be nice for some late night reading. I like how the screen flips over when held in the other hand, which is nice for lefties like myself. The physical page-turn buttons are nice, and I think I will prefer that over the squeeze type buttons on my voyage.

The sleep/wake definitely doesn't work correctly with the Ayotu case though, which is a shame as it actually feels pretty nice. They are still advertising compatibility with this version oasis in the description as well.

If you go to settings->page turn options, you can reverse the way the buttons work, if you so choose.

I am digging the new Oasis 3, although I have not had much time to read in the past week.

Things of note are that the lowest brightness setting is still super bright. Much more so than my OG oasis. And enough to bother my GF in bed. The warm light doesn’t seem THAT warm, but I typically max out that setting on other screens such as my phone so maybe it’s just me. The feature is very much appreciated. I hate the official cloth case because the kindle is just hard enough to pop out of it. I have no interest in reading with the case on, so I think I’ll return that and find some kind of sleeve. I really like the magnetic case on the original oasis because it was so easy to pop off and back on.

Any good, simple, protective sleeve type case recommendations? Something that will protect it well enough when its in a backpack day to day.

I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/WALNEW-Kindle-Sleeve-Protective-Insert/dp/B07GS1CCNC

It works fine, the material is a little rougher and felt-ier than I expected it to be but it's not bad. I wanted to avoid one with magnets because my last sleeve with a magnet enclosure kept turning my Paperwhite off and on, but you could probably look at any of the other Walnew sleeves and they'd all be fine.

Just bought an Amazon Paperwhite (10th generation). It's my first e-reader and Amazon electronics device. I'm wondering about people's opinion on whether or not to buy a case[1] for it or just go w/ a screen protector[2]?

I'm concerned about device durability and longevity, experience-affecting issues (big scratch on screen itself) but not cosmetic blemishes.

I looked at the OP and searched last 10 pages or so of this thread for discussion on this issue but didn't find any.

Thanks for reading.

For real do this. My husband got an offbrand one and I got the Amazon version. My case looks nearly new and he's been through 2 cases in the last 3 years. Both were subject to roughly the same mild-ish conditions-- thrown in a bag to commute to work being the roughest handling.

If you want to cheap out a bit, I've had the exact opposite experience as effika. Been using a Fintie case for years with no issues, it was 30-40% the price of the Amazon case, I'm assuming it's the same factory in China for all the off brands, just stamping different brand names.

Read e-books as I've been building a Humble Bundle ebook collection over the past two years or so. Want the eReader for contrast, less distractions and just to try it out over my iPad and smartphone. I figure I'm more likely to read with holding it in my hands than standing up in front of me, but idk. I bought the 6" model. I have [dead tree] book stands at home and work I can use if I want to prop it up on something. Edit: Throw it in my backpack and bring it along when I go to work or [infrequently] travel

Yeah, I just meant like where physically you'd use it, sorry to not clarify. If you're throwing it in a backpack everyday, definitely get a case. I just use the Kindle app on my phone when I'm at work/out and about and it syncs well, so I don't bother bringing the Paperwhite unless it's a vacation or longer thing.

I stopped bothering with a case for my kindle a long long time ago.

With the case on it doesn't fit in my pocket, and I get the "no fault" warranty anyway because I've cracked the screen on mine more than once. So with the no fault warranty, why bother with a case. . .

I've used cheap third party cases with the magnetic closures to trigger the on/off stuff for years, it's great. There's definitely been times when I was careless with the devices or accidentally dropped something on them, where they'd probably have ended up broken without the case in place.

Before I was using those I of course used the lighted cover for the Kindle 3, since that was handy to have before they added the lighting to the device proper, but that was a long long time ago now.

I like that the Oasis rests comfortably in the hand

I like that it takes up less pocket room than my old Paperwhite due to its overall thinness

I dislike that it inevitably wobbles if placed on a flat surface, unless braced

I dislike that I have to select "library" from the start home page, rather than just having that be the default. I don't want to see pictures of my books, I want my list.

Well, it's hard to say exactly, since each reader tends to be idiosyncratic and you can't really predict what weird thing it might do, like Kobo not nesting the table of contents or iBooks insisting on a secret file in the spine before it will respect publisher font choices. Just anything you see that doesn't seem to work right.

Where is she going to purchase books from in the future? Has she bought into the not-Amazon lifestyle?

You can absolutely convert ebooks bought from Amazon into other formats and strip the DRM from the ones that still come with DRM. But if she's already in the Amazon Kindle ecosystem and especially if she plans to keep buying there, getting anything other than a Kindle is probably a disservice. Especially if she's going to have to rely on you to convert her books for her.

I don't think the DRM has really changed since launch. They've changed book formats from azw/mobi to kfx and app versions which has caused pain but never a move to intentionally make it harder to break.

I would suggest just sticking with a kindle for her. If you wanted something as a tech-savvy individual yourself, then other options are certainly viable. For a wife who is already deep into the amazon ecosystem, sticking with what she knows makes sense.

Amazon offers good trade-in deals too, if you aren't opposed to sending in her old kindle. They give you a straight up 25% off a new purchase, along with a flat amount depending on what you are sending in. It can take a good chunk off of the cost of a new kindle. I traded in my voyage when I bought an Oasis 3, and it ended up saving me $125.

For case talk, I did just go and get the amazon 'premium leather' case, which is what I am going to stick with. It is a solid case, though the leather is pretty thin and doesn't feel quite as nice as the voyage version. I think the cheaper fabric version would be fine.

I bought the Ayotu skin touch one at the start, which had the the wake/sleep problem. Fixing that with a new version would have been fine, but the other thing I didn't like about it was that when the cover was folded back, it wasn't held into place at all. With the amazon case, folding the cover around will lightly magnetically stick it to the back of the case. It is a minor detail, but I find it adds to the usability.

I've been looking into getting an e-reader that runs some variant of Android, mostly because there's several apps I'd like to be able to use that regular e-readers don't support. I've got an old Nook Simple Touch but that's running Android 2.1 which is an utter pain to find compatible programs for. From some looking around, it seems like the two brands that make e-readers that let you use Android apps from the get go are Boox and Likebook. I'd probably be going for something in the seven-inch range, so like the Likebook Mars or the Boox Poke Pro. Just wondering if anyone had used stuff from either brand and had any opinions on them.

Kindle + Calibre question:

I like to manage the books on my Kindle using calibre. There's a plugin that lets calibre define kindle collections, but if I understand correctly, in order to use it with modern kindles and firmware, you have to jailbreak the kindle and install a homebrew app to process the collection info on the kindle.

Also, if I understand correctly, it is impossible to jailbreak current firmware versions, which means if I buy a new Kindle today, I can't keep defining collections in calibre.

Am I missing anything here?
