I played my first 8 hours entirely in VR. I also got stuck with no idea where to go because the UI is not really complete so it wasn't clear that I needed to go back in the pod and use the radio. It's a lot of fun in VR as long as you understand the game mechanics and are willing to put up with the clunky UI.

Or you can get the mod that gets rid of the UI completely! https://www.nexusmods.com/subnautica/mods/162 (Note I don't have VR and haven't test this in the slightest, but there's a comment that says to get it working to open "mod.json" and change the ID/first line to"Id": "ImmersionMod")

Is Below Zero worth getting now, or should I wait? I really liked Subnautica so I'm wondering if Below Zero isn't too much of a downgrade on account of it being in early access and everything

Given the success Subnautica had, I suspect they're only going to hike the price up as it nears completion. I've been thinking on buying it now just to save later - also because a mate keeps gushing about the pod truck.

That's a good point. I guess I want to know whether it's worth playing now. It certainly will be in the future but I want to know if it's good already.

They have confirmed that it will get a price increase at full release, 5$ or something like that, full release is expected to be early 2020. Below Zero is still missing a lot of the story, but the base game is there and it is just as good as the original. The map is smaller but it feels like they packed a lot more into it. The thing I am missing the most is a power source other than solar, but they aren't in the game yet.

What more do I need to say.

ikanreed posted:I played subnautica post release and then went through this thread. Likewise. I accidentally got exposed to some of that bitching when I was looking for a technical issue fix early on, and was terrified to ever build one, because I was given the impression it was made of paper and attacked by everything that moved all the time, and therefore worthless. So I didn't build one for my first, like, 60 hours.

I personally think the Cylops is awful, and together with those leeches makes the final level the most tedious and least fun part of the game. But it is my impression that the majority of people here like it.

I both love and hate the Cyclops for the same reason; that it obviates the need to ever build a base again

The Cyclops can be a huge help in the Lava Zone, but it has to be maxed out with shields, sonar, thermal reactor, maybe some ion power cells. So you have to explore the Lava Zone first before you can sail your Cyclops through it.

I liked the Cyclops but all my deaths in the game were attributable to clipping through it and bouncing through the geometry.

The first time I went all the way deep, I actually parked the barge and went down in a PRAWN with a backpack full of two thermal reactors, a room, a moon pool, and four power cell chargers. Building that poo poo and slamming it full of spare cells was a lot faster than equipping the cyclops and gave me a fallback in practical range of things in case not scraping leeches left me dead in the water. Totally overkill though, made it in and out of plot stuff only needing to replace two cells.

It's kind of both, in that it demonstrates the kind of astounding scale and interactivity the engine is capable of while simultaneously being a pain to use that doesn't fit into endgame gameplay (which is poorly thought out and disappointing as a whole).

The Cyclops is easy mode. The fact that leviathans will maybe it attack it twice before getting bored and doing something else, the fact that you leaving it will immediately make predators lost interest in it completely, and the fact that you can repair it for free (well, minor battery cost) in under a minute kind of means there's no threats worth worrying about even if you're not being careful and using silent running. If you plonk on a fire suppression system and shields you're pretty much invulnerable. I had a decoy in my tube but never used it. The lava larvae make very little difference to the amount of power you have available if you build a thermal module for the cyclops - ion cells are not required. And yes, turning the shield on for a second dislodges them instantly. How many people have figured out that the best way to locate damaged sections/larvae is to hop out of the sub, swim up front and look inside through the window at the holographic display that shows where the damage/larvae are? It's easier than checking the display from the inside. I felt so clever when I figured that out the first time.
