I had a moment like that where someone mentioned speedrunning fighting games in a stream once, so I got curious and checked my favourite one. There were two people who had run the game, both in different categories, and when I watched the record run for the easiest difficulty it was TERRIBLE, just the dude hitting one button over and over and it working most of the time. So, I loaded up the game and did a quick attempt. My first try was just me playing as though I were playing somebody online, and it was 9 minutes better than the 24-minute world record, so I submitted it. And that's how I became the fastest King of Fighters XIII player. Don't speedrun fighting games it's horrible.

I kind of want to attend speedrunning in person and see what it's like live, but the ones I know about are the really big ones like GDQ or RPGLB, which are off the table due to some combination of travel distance/expense/size/difficulty in buying tickets/etc. If there was a shorter one within reasonable driving distance that I could make a weekend of, I'd probably be able to swing that if I knew about it a few months in advance. Edit because I remembered something funny: For the submission description I wrote "I put zero thought into optimization beyond "I like these characters," and just played it like I would against a person." I did not realize that the only person who could verify runs was the guy I beat by nine minutes (which was obvious in retrospect), and it makes me laugh that he had the record for years and then someone beat it by a huge margin and wrote "I wasn't really trying at all." GPB can't announce the next location until umpteen behind the scenes folks tell him he can. They have Plans, and know the next several events, but can't announce them before they can announce them etc. He tries to make sure he can have local runners in the events etc too, so that's probably some of it. I don't even get inside info as his head mod. Capitalism is dumb.

Yeah I literally found out about it today and I'm glad I don't have any plans for Friday evening. I can't imagine the speedrun community in Hawaii is super big even if this was well-promoted in advance, so maybe I'll get to shoot the poo poo with him and the other runners.
