I don't think Frank Miller and John Romita Jr's Superman Year One will become one of those classic re-telling of origins
but it's pretty kooky and has some fun bits in it to say the least. If it had existed in the early 2010s, you could not have
prevented Zack Snyder from putting all that stuff in Man Of Steel.

If someone says it one more time I'm having Florina show up as a corpse. I'm not even kidding, I was pissed off with people doing that shit back in 2010, and I'm not dealing with it now in 2016.

Weird is like the best descriptor I have for the book, it's not bad, it's not good but it's... bizarre.

I haven't been following JL Odyssey too closely, but this seems like pretty clear case of a fake-out that they can easily walk back from (I mean that skeleton could've come from anywhere :v:), probably in the next issue or so. Like it seems like the villain has won and all hope is lost or whatever and then suddenly Jessica will be back and drop a horse on Darkseid or something.

I kinda loved it. The Atlantis thing is really bizarre and could/should have been an alternate origin for Aquaman instead, and Miller did absolutely get his rocks off shooting brown guys in their turbans for a few pages, but apart from some groaner lines, I thought the Terrence Malick-y poetic narration boxes really worked where they really didn't in the last issue. I think it's down to him not writing them from kid's POV this time.
Also thought it had a good deal of fun Superman action for JRjr to draw (giant chunky monsters and lots of exploding rocks) as opposed to the none in issue 1.

I'm behind fish fucker Clark.

edit: Ah. I had no idea Clark's mermaid girlfriend was a thing.

Which does go to prove how much actual attention CG pays to comics.

That there isn't an Elseworlds where Superman landed in Atlantis is a very missed opportunity.

The other company already has Namor.

I always thought the OG Lori Lemaris story made it clear what a good egg Superman was without any major hullabaloo. It never even occured to him to peek under Lori's blanket even when he was at the point of proposing.

That's too bad, but she did some good work and resolved a lot of things that needed to be resolved, so I'm putting her run squarely in the "w00t!" column. Now hopefully she just gets to resolve all of her own storylines in the book before she has to leave!

Orlando's WW is generally pretty decent. I'm not looking forward to seeing Diana's ninth secret aunt that we never heard about until now (seriously what is with this character and people giving her secret family members) but I gladly trust him on the reigns again. For a while at least.

It's kind of messed up how much space Miller dedicated to Jack Kirby wanting to gently caress mermaids, and then he doesn't even let Jack Kirby gently caress a mermaid.

It's honestly the best thing coming out of the Superman line right now. Not bogged down by Bendis's poo poo and generally capturing the whacky silver age hijinks really well. Also I really liked Superman and Jimmy's moment together, it had a genuine sincerity that worked well.

I found her run exceedingly meh so I welcome a new writer anytime. I didn't read Orlando's fill in stuff that much but I really liked him on Midnighter and currently on Martian Manhunter so here's hoping for good stuff.

So I'm mainly a Marvel guy, and the only thing I know Tom King from is his Vision series, which everyone seemed to love (including me). What happened? I haven't read his Batman but it seems to be hated by pretty much everyone. Is it worth taking a look if I liked Vision?

IMO, No. You're better off taking a look at Mister Miracle and possibly even Omega Men. There might be some standalone issues worth looking at, but on the whole it's not great.

Teenage Fansub
Jan 28, 2006

Yeah, pick up Mister Miracle, Omega Men and Sheriff of Babylon of some Vision-quality maxi series'. His first major job co-writing Grayson was really good too.
I think Batman does actually have some of his strongest work peppered in there. The Batman/Elmer Fudd one-shot is a good stand-alone sample, as funny as that sounds.

edit: Batman #23 is another good stand-alone teaming up with Swamp Thing. Then there's an Eisner winning short about Batman's dog in Annual #1. You used to be able to read that free online, but I can't find it now.

The highs are (not surprisingly) the lighthearted stuff and the weirder one-off issues. The buildup to the wedding was also really fun, and I was still willing to give the book a chance even when it pulled the rug out from under us, since I assumed it was all leading up to something. Which it was - 50 issues of "batman dumb, bane smart, everyone sad because of bane".

We're definitely in the lowest of the lows right now, it's just misery porn about how everything sucks and Batman's dumb as hell and his family hates him now and Captain Atom's a loving goober who got beat up to show how strong and badass the villain is. At least that part is pretty consistent with Captain Atom, I guess.

The thing about Tom Kings Batman is that it really drags in some places like the lead up to the wedding and the events that are currently taking place; It feels like it knows where it wants to go but isn't sure how to get there. Also I'm not too big a fan of the faux poetic waxing that happens a lot but when it works, it works.

Tom King's Batman feels like he had these big ideas for the "important" issue numbers like #50, #100, etc., but only had enough story for about ten issues in between them and has padded everything out with the most boring, miserable bullshit imaginable.

and if it's not miserable bullshit, it's full page single panels with a few textboxes with the intent to sound deep or profund but rarely gets up to intelligent.

Ever hear of a little something called Heroes in Crisis? Basically, writers tend not to get the benefit of any doubts anymore after they write some of the worst comics ever to see the light of day.

Even without that, I always thought his Batman got real overrated real quick, and the Bane stuff was the worst of it, and now it seems that "the Bane stuff" is going to be the capping climax of everything.
