Funny how neolibs are self-aware enough to recognize that their own unpopularity necessitates jailing socialists in order to hold voters hostage in a choice between them and fascists, but not self-aware enough to recognize that their unpopularity is why they will lose to fascists anyway.

Hitler: I want to ban left-wing parties but I need to change the constitution
Centrists: banning the socialists and communists would leave us all their votes by default! Very well, but we're not stupid we want a written promise that you won't ban us too
Hitler: okay can I give it to you after you vote to give me unlimited power and I don't need you anymore?
Centrists: hmmmm...something isn't right here...why?
Hitler: I want to make sure the typesetting is all perfect for you
Centrists: aw how sweet!

The best thing about it is that Lula’s presidency could be considered a socdem administration at best (more of a neoliberal with progressive tendencies, really), and they couldn’t even have that.

I know this isn’t technically the South America general thread but does anyone know of a good English source that’s covered AMLO? Everything a cursory google pulls up is just so absurdly hostile towards him it’s painful

If I had to guess, the idea to oust PT through lawfare really got going during the Honduras coup. As the US really pushed for the coup. Brazil supported Zelaya, and at one point the Brazilian embassy was sieged for over two months for hosting Zelaya there.

Mexican media is super dense and I haven't run into an American journo who adequately covers AMLO. However, John Ackerman is a lefty American professor who teaches in Mexico who has done blogs and interviews about AMLO.

The short of it:
AMLO's politics are uniquely Mexican, in the leftist mold of Lazaro Cardenas, but cannot be strictly defined as a socialist. On his worst days, he's a neoliberal who glad-hands the business class, but on his best days he's a radical populist.

Nine months into his presidency, he's:
- Cut ridiculously high gov. salaries
- Doubled social security benefits
- Created a stipend for NEETs
- Increased the minimum wage
- Declared the death of neoliberalism in Mexico and pissed off the entire right-wing

At the same time he loves courting the business class, boasting about the economy, and inviting foreign MNCs to Mexico. You could say he's playing the game, but it doesn't look good when he's promising a total political revolution.

It's from the correspondence section which means it's a letter to the editor rather than a peer-reviewed article, so I'm sure that's how people will delegitimize it despite it citing sources and everything.

Pointing to the economic failures of Venezuela as justification for further economic sanctions, causing further economic failures, is a cyclical, fallacious argument and not a legitimate public health approach.

This seems pretty average for left-wing politicians in the west and while not ideal doesn’t seem too bad to me either compared to who he replaced.

I should ask my grandma if she has Opinions about him.

It's easy to get jaded about these sorts of things, but AMLO's victory was genuinely a massive victory of the working-class and a shock to the political establishment. He's already goated compared to the neoliberal ghouls of the past 40+ years.

"the deaths caused are worth it" was also one of Volkerball's favorite canards. Especially when it came to Syria.

This also ties in to interventionists' favorite bit of weaponised twisted logic, where they blame non-interventionists for having blood on their own hands for not doing anything. But not intervening means you aren't engaged actively in a national crisis. It's the complete opposite of getting blood on your hands. You only take on responsibility for the crisis when you actively choose to make things worse, and pretending that doing something vs. not doing an intervention are morally equivalent is just a desperate self-rationalization where they get to claim greater moral authority because they're now the ones who are willing to make the hard choices to do the right thing.

Doktor Avalanche
