Last night on the end of campaign stream they said they are slowly working towards having all their sourcebooks PoD, so that's pretty cool.

Hey I got a question for you guys, I picked up this box at my local game store recently: https://www.amazon.com/Battletech-Game-of-Armored-Combat/dp/B07MCYLBCR It contains cards for the alpha strike rules, but nowhere in the box does it actually contain the alpha strike rules. Is this intentional? Or am I supposed to be able to use these cards regardless?

I've got a copy waiting for me at home, funnily enough, from CGL directly. Will let you know if I also have any Alpha Strike cards inside.

Or am I supposed to be able to use these cards regardless? The box contains the basic rules for standard play with normal record sheets for each 'Mech in the box (plus a few), and alpha strike cards as a bonus for the people who play Alpha Strike. No BattleTech box set (with the exception of BattleSpace?) has ever, to my knowledge, contained the full rulebook. There isn't a 'basic' version of Alpha Strike, a lot of Alpha Strike is balanced around using special pilot abilities, lance combos, and special command abilities to modify the way individual units play. VV Ah, so I was mistaken. I can't imagine Alpha Strike quickstart being any more than a page or two. PoptartsNinja fucked around with this message at 22:18 on Aug 21, 2019 |

There are the quick start alpha strike rules available for download.

They've given out Alpha Strike cards as promotional items a bunch of times so they're probably in the box for that reason.

I honestly can't remember if I asked this already: if Alpha Strike has all or nothing to-hit rolls isn't it incredibly swingy?

PoptartsNinja posted:(with the exception of BattleSpace?) BattleSpace had the full rulebook, just to confirm. The full manual was half the size of the typical Battletech rulebook, which may explain why it did.

General Battuta posted:I honestly can't remember if I asked this already: if Alpha Strike has all or nothing to-hit rolls isn't it incredibly swingy? Per unit? Yes. Across an entire force? It tends to even out. The basic unit of organization in Alpha Strike isn't a single mech, it's a lance. That analogy extends to combat, too. In that sense it's swingy in the same way as, say, an AC/20. A miss with your big gun feels bad; it shouldn't be your only gun.

I finished up the other half of the starter box: I am not too fond of the accent colours for the marik militia so I was a bit conservative with them, no clue how well that works lore wise.

I read that the new commanders edition has option rules for rolling a hit for each point of damaged in a unit. Apparently it feels a bit more like the classic rules and is less swingy

There's no reason to ever take anything that does less than 7 points of damage because you can just switch targets mid-attack with only a trivial penalty and ensure that no damage is ever wasted.

Battletech is most memorable (maybe, maybe not "best") when it's swingy. Regular CBT is swingy as hell and I love it.

So it sounds like a buff to clan players, who apparently usually loose anyway in AS. Perfect

Also hate clans and am happily ready to declare batchall just to piss off shitlords. I think it's always been an issue with Battletech since it attracts the worst sort of "old school" or "grognard" people.

It breaks up the outline, so it would work as a traditional camouflage. The only thing I'd be careful of is to avoid having the cockpit be the same color as other, otherwise unimportant parts of your mini. In BattleTech terms, I tend to do camo/unit scheme on mooooost of the mini, and then the obvious joints and gun barrels get a traditional metallic, usually gunmetal, because it helps draw attention to them.

Kinda unsure how ill do the cockpit but will see how i go about that. Maybe go with a dark green or darker blue. And yeah, I'm thinking of having the guns be a sort of half-camo, half-gunmetal/burnt effect
