The saddest thing about the "I retired and now I'm worthless without my jooooob" thing is that retirement should be for doing all those hobbies you used to love, but by the time people retire they loving hate their hobbies because they tried to "monetise" them - The person who loved to draw loving hates art now because they spent 10 years drawing fox porn for rich weirdos on patreon and the person who wanted to make the next hot indie game can't bear to look at a computer anymore because they spent 18 hour days making lovely mobile games designed to trick children into buying loot crates with their parents credit card.

Nah, most people just don't have hobbies. They watch TV.

My great aunt retired and then got a job at the dollar tree near where she lives at age like, 75, not because she needed more money but because it meant she was getting out of the house every day and got to meet and talk to people who came into the shop and stuff. She worked there until age 90 and loved every minute of it. If you're an old I can see how it might be a good way to maintain contact with the outside world and also get paid for it at the same time

My mom retired a few years ago and she is still lost. No friends or much interaction with anyone. She was happier when she was working and she had passion for things outside of work. My dad, me, and a few other family members are her only support group. Capitalism destroys lives and grinds people's hopes and dreams down.

She wasn't overworked or doing it because she'd die otherwise, she just found it enjoyable and also she got money for it. Now that she's finally too old for it (by her own measure), she's still fine, it's not like she's a depressed shut-in without it, she just liked doing it while she could

My mom was like that for a little while but then just started picking up old people stuff like mall walking and crafty hobbies that she could show off to her mom friends on facebook. Now she's gotten really really into making jewelry and has an entire workshop set up at home where she like, hammers and forms metal, etches it in acid, welds it with torches and other stuff to make honestly pretty darn good and impressive jewelry. When she was describing the process of like, etching and soldering it and grinding it clean and stuff I'm like "wow mom you're metal as gently caress" and she liked that a lot I hope your mom can find a similar passion of some kind, it really seems to help...

Ha, my last company used to give quarterly bonuses that were at least $500-$1000 or more depending on the business we did that quarter. Despite signing on several huge customers one quarter, they just cancelled the bonus program with no advance warning, they just didn't show up on the day we'd normally get them. Everyone basically got their pay docked by ~$2k a year. Then the company spent millions of dollars renovating an office where 50% of the employees work from home anyway.

Don't dox me. I actually did enjoy making lovely mobile games for about 5 years since we were an indie team and managed to subsidize our games work with app development, but eventually had to sell to some company that had us make lovely trivia games instead. Eventually got laid off, and I tried to monetize my drawing without going into gross stuff, made about a third of my rent for a few months, and went into teaching and eventually web design instead. I was really happy when I was an indie game artist, but I was barely scraping by, and now I grew up and have a family and a mortgage. I hardly draw anymore.

A short commute is insanely helpful to maintaining any kind of work life balance. Commutes over an hour are more or less explicitly exploitative and also as wealthy people continue pricing all the working people out of cities, where the loving jobs are, it's going to get worse and worse.

I've had days where I think about sleeping in my car and mine is only 45 minutes. Mostly cuz I gotta drive through a river canyon to get home. I've known all the turns since I was a kid but its still not something I'd drive if I was tired enough.

Your commute should be paid labor and the fact that it isn't is tantamount to wage theft.

also the reason for many people having enormously long commutes is that good public transportation is bad for automobile and oil industry profits, the uneven development of capitalism, gentrification, the employer does not have to directly compensate it, etc. automobile culture is so pernicious that people cannot imagine an alternative and believe delusions like fully self driving cars could solve traffic congestion
