My wife got obsessed with the tv show. It’s dumb trash but fun in a goofy way with how serious it is with all of it’s nonsense nomenclature. Before knowing that it was based off of a book series I figured it was somebody’s Vampire: The Masquerade fan fiction.

M. Night Shyamalan has proven time and again to be a charisma vacuum of a director in the vein of George Lucas circa Episode I, II, and III. He casts really great actors who then turn in :effort: performances because they can't do anything with his sloppy writing and directing. One of the best examples of this is Seychelle Gabriel, who's practically not there in The Last Airbender as Yue, but knocks it out of the park as Asami on Legend of Korra.

Yeah, they move on to talk about that early on in the GBBB video. Money well spent, clearly. I like in the language of THE FUTURE that they pronounce 'sir' 'suh' like Colonel Beauregard who fought in the War of Northern Aggression.

It's probbly too much for somebody to get into, but I would love a look at what Shyamalan considers a good take. Like, what makes a line read have him say 'cut, print' because even in his good films it feels like that standard is really low.

Now that I know at least Bryan has seen 'The Host' I'd love for them to do that film one day because wow.

but rather that celebrating spock assfucking kirk beyond anything than what it truly is, smut wish fulfillment, is as bad or at least as misguided, as celebrating the dregs you mentioned that are rotting in libraries. its not bad to write that to vent, it's not bad to feel identified with the author, or to even discover something about yourself in it, but pretending it's something it's not is not particularly great.

Was anyone doing this? Fanfiction as a concept and as a subculture is important. Any given work under the umbrella of fanfic is not itself necessarily inherently important, beyond probably signifying something important about the concept or the subculture.

HopperUK posted:

I know you don't mean this, ArfJason, but it's interesting and by interesting I mean depressing how much 'making fun of fanfic' involves 'making fun of how it's something women do'. Yeah, I wanted to touch on this too. Not accusing anyone ITT of leaning that way, but a lot of fanfic's reputation is depressingly mired in the fact that it's a thing that women like as well as its penchant for gay (or otherwise LGBTQ+) relationships. And I guess also the smut in general, because some people still flip out at the idea of strangers getting their rocks off to something non-traditional.

There's also the fact that a lot of the more volatile outliers tend to come from the most loathsome organism on this earth - the 16 year old girl. Who could've guessed that a hormone-addled teenager in the throes of a heteronormative frenzy over the latest heart-throb might end up writing some weird, embarrassing poo poo? I like how in three pages of fan-fic squabbling there was no mention of:

  • 50 Shades of Grey, which (unless I'm mistaken) originally started out as a Twilight fan-fic
  • That one Super Smash Bros. fan-fic that supposedly longer than War and Peace
  • Tails Gets Trolled (unless that one is disqualified for being a comic)
  • That one Harry Potter fan-fic where Hermoine is a werewolf or some poo poo and then CJ from San Andreas shows up.
  • Expanded Universe books for various franchises (Star Wars, Star Trek, Dungeons and Dragons, etc.)

Yeah you don't see the same sort of venom spat at video game mods, which for a time were of similar quality and were created for the same reasons, but were mostly made byboys/men. I use the past tense because with developer shittiness and the progression of technology has made the barrier for entry on mods far higher than in the early internet age.

I don't know about that. I can't really speak for 10-15 years ago, but nowadays people usually dunk on mod authors for making endless nude/fetish mods for Skyrim, or for being egotistical asses about their work. In fact, based on some of the accounts I've read in the Awful/Awesome mod thread, mod authors fit the bill more for being people who shut out negative critcism (to the point where the I think the Nexus has it so that authors can ban you from downloading their mod.)

Still, I think people still mocked terrible mods back then as much they do now (some of the Baldur's Gate 2 mods spring to mind).

As to the topic of gender, again I can't really speak for that, since I don't have a extensive knowledge of gender demographics for mod authors (though in a lot of cases, I think mod authors don't typically reveal much of their identity unless they become really high-profile). Off the top of my head, I can only really think of Eliianora, who's done a lot of really good player home mods for Fallout 4. I also remember reading (though I don't know if this is true or not) that one of nude body mods for Skyrim was done by a woman.

Mods are a lot more obscure than fanfiction, and less accessible. The only time most people will hear about a mod is if it’s a relatively high-profile success, like the ones for Bloodlines and KOTR2. Bethesda games do have a flood of terrible low-effort mods, but you aren’t likely to hear about those unless you go looking for them.

By contrast, any piece of media that gains any sort of popularity will immediately attract page after page of fanfiction. It’s much easier to create, and it’s also much easier to consume, meaning there’s going to be a lot more crap out there and more people are going to stumble onto it.

On the subject of expanded universe books, I did mention them briefly and while they don’t exactly have a great reputation they can certainly be good in some cases. At the very least, you know one has been looked at by a professional editor and at the very very least, you know it’s a finished book and that the author didn’t just get bored halfway through and give up. Getting the rights to a certain property also implies that the rights-holder has at least a little faith in the author that they won't gently caress it up, though this isn't a guarantee.

I think a great example would be the Newgrounds era.
