Snapped a picture of grumpy toad in my driveway yesterday morning. My 6 year old daughter that it was the most amazing thing ever to see him.

Toadlets can be really teeny. They tend to lay lots more but smaller eggs than frogs, have teensier tadpoles, and emerge pretty quickly. A new to land toadlet can be under half a cm. The tadpoles also tend to swarm, so you'll see this black wriggling mass moving around in the water. Since toads are more land dwellers, they often use ephemeral pools from rains. There are some desert toads that can go from egg to toadlet in about three weeks (vs. some frogs that take two seasons as tadpoles). Fun toad fact: to beat the drying out of their pools, some turn cannibal, developing carnivorous jaws and eating unrelated tadpoles.

We get a lot of frogs here in a kind of swampy area of Wisconsin, during the rainy months I get a lot of them hanging out on my office windows catching moths. Then this summer me and my Dad put in a pond we'll fill with fish at some point, but all the frogs have made it a primo hang out spot. If you walk over to it early in the morning you can hear the little *ploink* as they all jump into the water and then you can watch them swim around. I really hope we get tadpoles at some point, I want my yard filled with froggo friends.

It recently occurred to me that this behavior of my cat may be considered cute, so I made a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qaxGQC1sVI

Southern WI is where my workplace is located, and it's out on the outskirts of town by a field, so we get a lot of fun wildlife popping in. Given it's been rainy/humid, a lot of bugs show up at the stupid-bright lights over the entrance, so it's basically an amphibian paradise. We also have a mated pair of sandhill cranes that keep showing up every spring/summer. Raptor1033 posted:I was on a trail and noticed a tiny toad barely bigger than a centimeter just as my giant foot smashed down right next to it. So sorry I nearly ended you, little friend! I kept a much closer eye out the rest of the walk. There was an exceptionally large toad that showed up at our door repeatedly this summer. He got stuck in the door twice when I was exiting in and out of the building, and both times I felt like a total rear end in a top hat (I didn't see him until I came back in). Third time, my coworker accidentally shut the door on him while she was on her way out, and about thirty minutes later, I went outside to grab something from my car, and there he was. I was positive the poor dude was dead. Apparently, toads are a lot more resilient than I thought, because even though he was massively dazed, he eventually (slowly) got up, and by morning, had hopped off somewhere else. I nearly called a vet that morning, but when I saw he was gone, figured he was-- fine-ish. I haven't seen him again. I choose to believe he learned not to camp out in front of the door, finally, rather than 'died of internal injuries' which doesn't seem entirely unlikely. Toadchat - can't remember if I posted the bucket of toads, but I joined the local Toad Patrol last spring. Around the 4 weeks or so of toad mating season, we patrol known migration routes that cross roads and carry the toads across. Some sites can help several 100 a night.

Safari Disco Lion posted:I could never handle a litter of baby kittens. They'd never get any rest and quiet around me, I'd spend every waking moment patting them and giving them kisses. Well, my neighbor came home with a foundling that still has the umbilical attached. Can't be more than a week old at most. I have tried to help his daughter set-up for frequent (every 1-2 hours) bottle feedings on kitten formula, pointers on keeping her with a heat source she can move towards & away from, away from the other 2-cats and (good) dog... she's got a good glossy coat, good set of lungs, and good strength...but they can fade fast at this age. I insisted that they get her to the vet's first thing tomorrow to be checked out & get the best rearing advice. If the kid can keep her alive for the next two weeks, her odds will improve dramatically.
