That, and acting as the physical manifestation of the literal wrath of God meting out divine vengeance on those who would enslave other humans.

There is a certain type of person who likes to talk about how Lincoln and Sherman and other prominent Unionists were racists and didn't really care about slavery but there were some serious concentrations of abolitionists in the North and they were pretty hard core.
