This, like everything else involving nukes was studied in the 50s. Unlike such great ideas as "use nukes for mining" it was dismissed as impractical, putting it in the category of nuclear powered cruise missiles.

This one might have actually been feasible if it wasn't for the hilarious level of risk:

The US meat industry is scared about veggie burgers and is leaning on Congress to make sure that consumers know it.

quote:

In 2019, officials in nearly 30 states have proposed bills to prohibit companies from using words such as meat, burger, sausage, jerky or hot dog unless the product came from an animal that was born, raised and slaughtered in a traditional way. Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Wyoming have already enacted such laws. In Missouri, the first state where the ban took effect, violators incur a $1,000 fine and as much as a year in prison. Mississippi’s new law is sweeping: “Any food product containing cell-cultured animal tissue or plant-based or insect-based food shall not be labeled meat or as a meat product.”

Given how environmentally destructive beef consumption is, I seriously have no problem if these meatless alternatives like Impossible get more people eating their substitutes, even if they’re highly processed. Even if Burger King is leaning hard into the marketing for their Impossible Whopper, it’s not like the meat industry is going to be mortally wounded and die out overnight over this.

That reads more like its targeting lab grown meat, which is even dumber. If we can get the meat we want without the same level of environmental impact, we get the best of both worlds

Expect more of the same as industries that are contributing to the destruction of the environment in a big way push back against the narrative that they're to blame, especially when they're centered in red states. It's the same thing as the coal industry, though the free market is the one that is properly loving that industry. The meat industry is terrified of the veggie stuff being price competitive so they're trying to scare away adoption.

There is definitely a soft marketing campaign against the alternative burgers, my news feed has been overloaded with stories and videos about how the impossible burger is just as unhealthy as a regular burger. Like motherfucker, I'm not eating a burger because I'm concerned about the nutritional value.
The death of the beef industry would be great because it would mean the death of the corn and soy industries, which would maybe mean we could get a better variety of affordable fresh seasonal veggies, I mean I'm not betting on it happening, but it would be nice not to have to pay 2.99/lb for turnips or rutabaga.

I think that’s the best way for them to handle it too. Just lean into it not being meat and make no apologies about it.

I’ve tried the impossible whopper and the beyond burger in the last couple of weeks. The whopper patty was slightly drier than a normal patty, but not unappetizingly so. The beyond burger had just a hint of that school burger flavor, but was otherwise delicious.

The meat industry should be terrified. With options like these I’m having a hard time finding any reason to keep eating beef burgers and I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who feel the same.

Pretty much.

I had one a few weeks back and it was pretty good. I'm not going to say I'll never have ground beef ever again, but if I have the option, I'll likely go with the impossible.

And TBH, as much as I love steaks, I've moved more towards only eating it when I go out somewhere and even then it's like once every few months.

That's when I'll give it a shot. If I'm in the unfortunate situation of relying on BK for food, the last thing I'm going to do is take the chance that after one bit I'm pitching it in the trash and relying on a little thing of onion rings for the day.

You can purchase vegetarian burgers (and chicken tenders, and everything else) at grocery stores here in the States, just not Impossible Burgers or Beyond Meat. Both brands intentionally limited distribution and sold only to the restaurant market initially because it had higher margins. I'm guessing they're finally happy enough with their market penetration and brand awareness to set up distribution to grocery chains.
