Putting baffles on the ceiling is bad in an age before central air conditioning. Getting air between rooms is why buildings used to have transoms.

I feel like theres a great gradient of 70s/80s sci-fi futurism to be traced through the Space Hilton from 2001: A Space Odyssey, the first 2 Star Trek films, Alien, etc.

Phil Moscowitz posted:Come on dude, this is the total opposite of McMansion. Yeah it's pretty textbook Queen Anne free style. That house's roofline and facade are complex but it all fits together to create a coherent house form vs the procedurally generated roofs of McMansion. I can understand why the Arts & Crafts movement sought to curb the ever-increasing extravagance of residential architecture and return to natural and less expensive forms, but a well-designed Queen Anne will never not be gorgeous to me.

Mr. Mambold posted:No, quite the opposite. You build it with hexagonals and pentagonal frameworks. Like a soccer ball. That was a Mother Earth special back in the day. I had a friend who tried to build one making a bamboo frame that he would then drape burlap over and coat that with gunnite. But, he could never find quality bamboo, so it withered. This house in my neighborhood has had an extremely janky geodesic shed for years. I wish I had a better picture of it. It has repurposed doors and windows, and is sheathed in some kind of silvery sheeting. I'd love to know what it looked like inside.

Yeah, the problem is that there's so much Bad Fake Queen Anne Bullshit that the real poo poo can end up setting off negative reactions by association. I have that problem with Louis XIV style stuff, just a visceral hatred even when I know it's the real thing and done well.

That looks great. Is the vanity custom? Where's it from? I want to replace my master bath single sink and linen cabinet with a double sink vanity.
|
# ? Aug 26, 2019 07:54 |

That vanity is a custom (full) and costs around $2500, including materials + labor. It's made by a local company in the bay area owned by a bunch of Korean people. Typically a custom will probably be closer to $4000 (they get expensive very fast). Consider going semi-custom instead. Basically, don't go custom unless you have infinite amounts of money, or are looking for something very specific.

The apartment in Mindhunter is virtually identical but I can only find a Pinterest gif for comparison.

Could use a power washing and some re plastering but it looks kinda cool. I'm hoping that hole in the roof is for one of those 60s circular open fires with the hood over it.
