You see all the colors.
All of them.

The complaint this time seems less like a direct accusation of plagiarism and more "sure I was cited but in the least respectful way possible." The Dollop is in a weird space between the comedy and history worlds at this point and the latter is way more rigid about how citations and transformative use works than the former, although the method of dealing with it being "yell at them in public until everyone boos them enough for them to stop" seems the same.

Reading back on this thread the last time this came up (2015 was 4 years ago what is time) I thought what they're doing now would be sufficient. Now that I see how other podcasts handle the same kind of lane, it does come off as the bare minimum. I don't know that it's outright malicious though, and as I guessed last time Dave will probably make a stink and then come around to whatever makes sense, at least for single article Dollops like this one.

lol that's a lot of bullshit with a few actual primary sources. I don't see the problem.

Parakeet vs. Phone

Well for the one that the complaint was about, The Welfare Queen, there were 3 sources.

https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/09/welfare-queen-myth/501470/

http://www.slate.com/articles/podcasts/gabfest/2013/12/the_gabfest_on_judge_richard_leon_s_nsa_ruling_ruth_bader_ginsburg_s_refusal.html

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_...an_villain.html

And yeah, that's 2 mostly fluff and one that was the clear meat. So, in that case, they could just point out that it's a cool article.

Although, yes I got it mixed up too. I thought that episode was out like a year ago and cribbed off of the book, but it's a few years older. Times flies and has lost all meaning, etc.. So the guy's complaint is specifically that they made a popular episode a while back that heavily cribbed off an article that he later turned into a book, and they got a lot of credit and money and he didn't. Which seems to be more a general failing of the world than The Dollop.

the problem isn't that he isn't footnoting you slobs it's that he's word for word taking other people's work and referencing that in a way that very few of his listeners will care about or appreciate (compared to say, the 5-7 minutes of paid ads he runs every ep, or the live crowds he performs in front of)

how ethical or moral this practice is shouldn't be bounded by "is he technically copyright infringing?"

Split the difference, "citations and affiate links for the books worth maybe buying on the website. Because gently caress giving royalties to Donald Trump, (random person), or my dad".

He can still be angry and capresious and skip saying all the references, but he also throws a bit of coin the authors way.

This won't be fully satisfying to anyone, which is why I think Dave could live with it.

the sources website they discuss when plugging squarespace ads isnt actually a joke

The libsyn description for an episode has a link to the sources for like every episode, and every other feed basically clones that or strips out links

Nobody is saying that the entire concept of the Dollop is morally indefensible. The Soylent episode having a ton of sources is a good thing. But if they're going to base an episode almost entirely around a single source--like the welfare queen one, and I assume others like the hippo one--the absolute least they could do is give credit to that source specifically. It would add an extra 15 seconds or so to a podcast that regularly doesn't get started until minute 12.
