There was a pretty good novelization of what would happen if a limited exchange between 1980s ICBMs would be like and the outcome was pretty grim. Economies wrecked, governments shattered, ecology capping human growth back to 1300s levels. Nukes are bad. Real loving bad. There's no point in owning a weapon that owns you.
