Nah, they'll drag the ship down with them - there's no way they're going to take seven years' worth of CryEngine fudging and try to replicate it in Unity or whatever. The thing will just die.

You can quote the poo poo out of that.

It's funny because "The lawsuit will absolutely kill the game if it goes forward" was the prediction made in this very thread when it started- almost two years ago now, I think?

This thing has always been doomed but it's doomed on such a long timeline that most backers can go years without thinking about it. Kind of like climate change except much much stupider.

You're all willfully blind.
For years, Chris Roberts has known that his true vision couldn't be realized with CryEngine. Once he got enough backer support, he tried to escape CryTek's clutches only to have them turn around and sue him. For years, CIG has been in limbo, awaiting the day they could finally move to a working engine. Chris Roberts made a difficult decision--the only way to stop CryTek from taking everything is not to release anything. Ships were sold, yes, but as long as they weren't in game, CryTek didn't have standing. ToS changes stating backers weren't buying assets, only development? Working towards the objective--every dollar that is sent to CIG without obligation or accountability is a dollar that can stay within CIG. It has been incredibly hard for the Roberts family, facing ridicule for spending millions of dev dollars on mocap, pipelines, and Hollywood actors. In a mere 30 months, the lawsuit with CryTek will be settled, and development of Star Citizen can truly begin. Answer the Call 2024 at the Epic Games Store, the exclusive vendor of Squadron 42.

The thing is that the only way this project can die is if some outside influence forces it to do so. Otherwise there are thousands of fools willing to fund it as long as it doesn't release.

IMO it's not in crobo's financial interest to switch engines. There is some level of risk that this could result in a premature end of the project. With the current trajectory Crobo and his family can continue milking true believers for at least another 2 years (perhaps even more?).

They'll HAVE to if Crytech wins the lawsuit. Being prepared for that possibility, no matter how slim, is probably a good idea.

On the Star Citizen front, while I won't pop the champagne over the backers waking up, I will absolutely feel schadenfreude over the Twitch shills going through the "pivot phase", where they awkwardly try to change their games and "re-brand" while shifting uncomfortably in their chairs when someone asks "Hey didn't you use to play Star Citizen?"

Seriously, toxic fanboys I can understand and empathize with to a certain point , but the fake enthusiasm , enforced positivity shills seeing their Twitch careers crap after plugging this scam for so long...

Not entirely sure, but IIRC, when CIG were boasting about 64bit or something like that a few years ago, it was already implemented in the then new version of CryEngine.

There again, CIG boasted about adding inverse kinematics into StarEngine years ago, when it actually was already part of the version of CryEngine they were using.

Man, they boasted about implementing render to texture years ago. Imagine that, a tech standard to render APIs like OpenGL and DirectX a decade ago.. and they were boasting about it.

Thinking about it, this might have been the turning point for me: the moment I woke up and realized "why are they trying to pass out such basic tech, that all video game companies in the world have been using for a decade, like it's never been done before" ?

Imagine if they actually worked like that. Half of the company working on one patch, the other half on the other. How would they get anything done?

If they share the codebase, the other half is always in the middle of development while the other one is trying to make a release. If they're working on separate branches, they would have to go through a huge merge (six months out of date!) on every release.

This. This. Totally this.

It can make sense when the works are independent, but on a large scale project, the overhead of merging and introducing brand new bugs every 3 months is going to be lol-esque.

On the other hand, their targets are insane- half a million sales is the break even point? It's a loving gearbox knockoff, it'll be lucky to hit a tenth of that. I'm sure this will be finished soon. 100 multi-planet systems, a galaxy at war, millions of NPCs driving a fully realised economy, capital ships to explore, land to buy, tanks to drive into battle in Vanduul systems, entire cities, secret jump routes to discover, sandworms to ride, gunfights more lethal than Call of Duty.

Hello friends, posters, spacemen,

I just want to give you a heads up for a change that will be happening sometime next week. After some shuffling around, and a little bit of planning, we've decided we are going to be closing the Stupid Crowdfunding Accomplishments Mausoleum and rebooting the next iteration of the Star Citizen thread in the main Games forum. We haven't nailed down exactly when this is going to happen aside from "next week at some point" but I wanted to give you as much advance notice as I could. I'm going to get an OP typed up so even if I don't have power next week one of the admins can still take care of things. Anyway if you have any questions feel free to ask me, but it should be pretty straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions (that I just made up):

Why are we doing this?

Because the Star Citizen thread is no longer a 10,000 post a day behemoth, it doesn't really need its own dedicated moderator/subforum. Folding it back into Games will make it more accessible to people and easier to post jokes in.

What does this mean?

Uhhhhh we're moving to Games, that's pretty much it?

Okay but how does this affect my ability to laugh about $700 concept art?

It doesn't, you'll just go to the Games subforum and do it there. Maybe we'll make some new friends.

I don't believe it either.

I mean, not saying he's lying - I think they could certainly be discussing it and throwing ideas in the air. But I don't believe they would really, actually, do it. They'd lose good faith from a lot of their hardcore backers and whales IMO. Plus they can't afford other significant delays to SQ42 and money will be running out.
