It didn't become available until a few months after Descent II released though. You'd hear stories of guys mowing through these things every six months because the hat switches would break off from playing too much Descent. I've got a 3dconnexion spacemouse thing at work, it's super great for 3D and 2D CAD work. I've never tried making it work for games, though - I think there is a way to set up generic XML files for mapping the axes to keyboard or mouse inputs. One day I'll give it a try... Wow, exactly as you said the game really shines with these medium-sized rooms. I was actually thinking you could have busted out the vulcan for some hitscan action on the more nimble enemies. It's still total bullshit how difficult it is to dodge homing missiles - it feels like you really can't jink them or lead them into walls, you need a piece of cover directly between you and the missile.

This is it, the homing missiles are a lot nastier now on modern computers than they were on release. There's more discussion of the exact mechanics upthread, but on release they were definitely dodge-able.

One of the things that the Rebirth mod that I'm using does specifically is limit the turn speed of Homing missiles due to the nature of the faster computers nowadays.

It's worth a look since Vertigo is extraordinarily beefy for an expansion pack by today's standards: 20 or so new levels, new robots, new music, and new game modes. I still have the CDs somewhere but don't recall if I ever finished it. Mine design in Descent 2 gets pretty abstract and Vertigo cranks that even further so I'd get lost all the time. The original Descent also had a Levels of the World retail pack which is similarly not for sale but may or may not be floating around the Internet.

I'd say a new thread could give it a bit more exposure. And yeah, Freespace is a game that really deserves LPing but it's got the Descent brand for marketing. Fairly sure even Freespace 2 got rid of that.

How about one big thread and the subtitle can change as the games do? "Descent LP Station: Descent 1 - 6 Degrees of OSHA Violations" "Descent LP Station: Descent 2 - No Honor Among Thief Bots" etc. Regarding Freespace and prefixing "Descent" to the name: quote:FreeSpace was Volition's first project after the split from Parallax Software, which also spawned Outrage Entertainment. It is not part of the canon of the Descent computer game series, and contained none of its ideas and only small portions of its code. It was only prefixed with Descent to avoid trademark issues with Mijenix Corporation's "FreeSpace", a disk compression utility. In Europe they named it Conflict: Freespace which probably should've been used globally but I guess someone at Interplay thought the association with Descent would help sales. By the time Freespace 2 came around I'm not sure if Interplay felt the "2" made it different enough, they stopped caring, or someone from Mijenix confirmed they didn't care.

You have an audio desync issue towards the end of the commentated video. It's most noticeable when you're fighting the reactor and the self-destruct notification plays before the reactor is destroyed and the timer pops up, and also at the end of the video when the audio just cuts out abruptly a few seconds before the video ends.
