This is probably common knowledge but Fujin's lines are the result of awkward localisation. In the original script he spoke in single Kanji characters.

I guess the translator thought big characters require equally big letters.

(Not that speaking in Kanji makes any more sense)

In the UK, some schools have a Head Boy and a Head Girl, two older "exceptional" students who are given some level of fake authority. Thinking about it, I can totally see Quistis as a Head Girl, much more than I can see her as a teacher or "instructor" to be honest. This is now my headcanon.

I love how even though Selphie is so generic and undefinable, we all still probably knew someone just like her at school.

This is a thing in a few Square games, right? Like, I think Robo from Chrono Trigger starts out by talking in weird and unfamiliar hiragana/katakana (I can't remember which) but as he becomes more humanised it starts to get phased out in favour of more "normal" speech. It's a neat idea, just a shame that English can't really accommodate it that well. Though I have to believe there were better ways of doing it than RAGE.

AngryRobotsInc

There just really isn't an easy way to translate Fujin's way of speaking. The way she talks just doesn't make any grammatical sense at all, and not in a way that's particularly easy to get across in English.

ALL CAPS robot mode is a compromise that works well enough to "This girl's weird".

If I recall right, most of the robots in the game speak entirely in katakana, where Robo doesn't use it for everything, but does use more than the other characters. All katakana is a very typical way of writing out robotic speech.

Seifer and co are all Prefects, 100%

Fujin would have been completely improved by simply changing her text to lower case instead of all caps. You could imagine her then as someone who plays things very close to her chest, very taciturn. Instead she screams "RAGE!" and kicks Rajin in the shins, which I thought was really funny when I was 12

I assume the 30 fps limit is due to some legacy engine poo poo. People should probably be more upset at the lack of widescreen support but

I was trauling the Steam forums on my lunch break because I have a morbid fascination with poo poo posts and noticed they even remastered the product description:

Original FFVIII Steam Description posted:

It is a time of war. Galbadia, a Global Superpower, has declared war on Dollet, a country whose training academy is home to two personalities: the hot-headed Seifer and the 'lone wolf', Squall Leonhart. Both are equally at conflict with each other as their country is with Galbadia; to others, Squall appears lacking in team spirit, while Seifer lacks the discipline of his rival. However, a chance encounter with the free-spirited Rinoa Heartilly turns Squall's universe upside down; having thrived on discipline, Squall find the carefree Rinoa fascinating. He also begins to dream that he is Laguna Loire, a Galbadian army soldier…

Meanwhile, a sorceress manipulates the most powerful men in Galbadia.
Will Squall and his party succeed in defeating this maniacal sorceress and saving their world?
What part does the mysterious Laguna play? Only you can decide what happens next, as the greatest Role Playing Adventure of all time returns...

FFVIII Remastered Steam Description posted:

It is a time of war.
The Republic of Galbadia, under the influence of the sorceress Edea, mobilises its great armies against the other nations of the world.
Squall and other members of SeeD, an elite mercenary force, join hands with Rinoa, a resistance fighter, to fight against Galbadia's tyrannical rule and to prevent Edea from fulfilling her ultimate goal.

That first one is bizarre. Also it looked like original FFVIII had an age gate that the new one doesn't have. Surely that's not actually just because of Siren, right?

That merkin coverup is pretty lame and looks sorta weird on the dress, but it's not 62% negative reviews on Steam bad (only 175 total reviews showing). People are also upset about the 15FPS battle and the upscaled, but not re-rendered, 4:3 movies. This along with FF3 and FF4DS must run on branches of the same engine. Probably FF9 too.

Of all things to ruin some people's Tuesday, it's a low-poly pussy curtain and presenting the game close to how it originally was. Oh, internet...

Down to 39% now. Still some censorship complaints but mostly that it just doesn't feel like much of a "remaster," which is a word they probably shouldn't have used in the marketing. Unrealistic expectations for unreasonable people.

The double dip is legitimately a harder sell on PC since the PC rerelease from a few years ago already had some built in cheats, achievements, cloud saves and stuff. I've basically just been looking forward to this from day one for the model replacements.

V look out for my texture replacement mod that gives Squall a big bushy beard. It gives him a modern-day Jake Gyllenhaal vibe that I think fans of Final Fantasy and cinema will really enjoy.

What exactly did people expect that they didn't get? I know there was a rumor of voice acting, but that was a longshot.

This remaster is great. I'm enjoying the gently caress out of it, and I've only just finished the Dollet mission.

Apparently that's what they did for the Resident Evil Remake remaster (or I think they actually just zoomed in the camera and cut off part of the shot to get it to widescreen, not the background images specifically, but functionally that's still zooming in on the images). They must have had much better assets to begin with though because I remember that game's environments looking pretty sharp in 1080p.

IIRC Capcom also touched up some of the graphics and even added animated 3D stuff that looks like as if it's part of the background.
