Though it's not even a very old tradition, until 1918 elections happened over a 4 week period. Between 1918 & 1935 it was just on "a day, whatever" but from 1935 onwards election day has been on Thursday and so it always has to be on Thursday because we're a stupid country.

Chuka Umunna & Sarah Wollaston joined the Lib Dems while Heidi Allen, Luciana Berger, Gavin Shuker & Angela Smith left the group to form a new group of independent MPs that's definitely not a party, called The Independents. It's very silly.
