When modding warframes, what mods are mandatory? It feels like you always want: Ability Efficiency, Max Energy, Ability Strength, Duration, etc. And which of them can you safely drop in which situations?

I don't have Animal Instinct I'm barely in to Saturn. Though it feels like I'm just about ready to blast straight through the Star Chart, I'm actually pretty pimped out since the weekend, I've got a 3-forma Hek, a Primed Point Blank, and a Scattered Justice.

Depends on the frame. Some demand that you go all in on strength, others let you dump range or duration without consequence, and when you get Rage or a set of Arcane Energize efficiency becomes less important than total energy capacity.

I usually lean towards range and efficiency on most frames. There's no point to having powers if you can't afford to cast them or they won't reach your target.

Your aura should always be Corrosive Projection until you know enough to know the very very small number of situations where you want something else. The rest is entirely specific to the frame and build. The only thing that's usually consistent is you want (Primed) Continuity, since the situations where duration doesn't matter are extremely rare. Even if that's your only duration mod, you're still slapping it in there. If your build has a defensive slot it's almost always Vitality, and a second defensive slot is always Adaptation.

There are no universally mandatory mods, it depends on the Warframe and on what you're doing with it.

I guess maybe Vitality (health), because there are very few truly shield-tanking frames and they're kind of gimmicky due to all the shortcomings and exceptions involved with shield tanking, but even that's negotiable.

And Corrosive Projection, of course.

Mailer posted:

Adaptation isn't even close to universal. Squishy frames get no benefit from it because it's burst damage, not sustained damage, that kills you, and Adaptation only helps with the latter. Super-tanky frames usually don't need it because it's simply overkill for the vast majority of content.

The only time it really makes sense is on frames that either want to sit around taking damage on purpose, or that have massive health pools + innate regen, or both. I use it on Nidus and Wisp, and not much else, for example.

e: it's also good for shield tanking, since it's one of the very few ways to get resistances on shield HP, but again, shield tanking is kind of a gimmick

I tend to use it on frames who aren't absolute tanks but can almost always take a hit or three. If I have a slot left over for it and feel like making my survivability silly good, usually opposed to slightly bumping some stat i'm already stacking because there is little benefit to slotting an augur mod, for example.

Just to add to what others have said, duration is usually nice and I almost always like at least 130% efficiency. But there are certainly frames that don't really need to worry about it, my eso saryn build definitely has tanked efficiency. Some frames don't care about strength at all, others don't really care about range. It very much depends, the most common things you'll be buffing are vitality, max energy from flow, and then you'll usually either buff out two stats or go with a kind of balanced build with some utility thrown in there.

These poles made from wood, and the crossarms from iron.
Adaptation + Redirection + Arcane Aegis is a solid shield tanking combo that works on a lot of frames that don't have a way to be tanky normally. Frames with 300+ base armor or health buffs/restores built into their kit will still want health/armor, but I've found it to be pretty effective for a lot less of an investment than the Arcane Grace + Guardian combo.

Well, join one of the clans and ask for one, having loot and enemy radar is pretty nice.

If you get oneshot then you're gonna die. Maybe a massive energy pool and Quick Thinking would save you, but you're now a frame made of paper with no energy. It really doesn't matter what your second defensive slot is if you're taking overwhelming damage. I don't bother trying to protect against this.

Adaptation will save you a ton of damage from sources you otherwise are just going to eat. Stray bullets, status procs, all the random eidolon bullshit that isn't a yellow laser, and anything else that would kill you but won't because your Grace kicks in or you have time to pop into spoiler to let Repair work or you pick up some life jello. It makes your shields actually mean something, even if it's a tiny boost. It's a really, really good mod.

What I said is incorrect, though, because I was just basing it on frames I play and that tends to favor speed and killing power over damage protection. Rhino, Valkyr, Atlas, Chroma (if you're not using him for dolons), and Nidus would all probably benefit more from stacking armor as a secondary slot. They'd still benefit from Adaptation on top of that, but once you're virtually unkillable there isn't much reason to go that extra step. If you wanted completely unkillable you'd do the dumb Hildryn build anyway, assuming that hasn't been nerfed yet.

Edit: Also none of this is really applicable to a new player. I was only mentioning it in terms of common links between builds. Adaptation, for a large portion of the cast, is gonna be your go-to secondary defensive mod for builds with a secondary defensive slot open.

Nidus doesn't benefit more from armor. Vitality + Adaptation makes him much tankier than triple umbrals, even. (I've played hundreds of hours with both these builds; it's quite noticeable.)

However, this is because Nidus has incredibly high innate armor and health, a built-in source of 90% DR on top of that (but one that comes at an opportunity cost, so you don't always want it up), and is pretty much the poster child for Hunter Adrenaline use since he has no shields. Adaptation was made for him.

An arcane guardian set will make any Warframe 3x more survivable, and is useful on nearly every Warframe in the game.

It will also keep you alive long enough for adaptation to kick in.

You don't need to upgrade Adaptation very much to get the benefit. You still hit 90% DR either way, it just takes slightly more hits, slightly more often if it isn't maxed.

I just finally leveled Wukong yesterday and honestly that frame just seems too powerful and good for things that aren't "defending a single objective" (though it's great for that too with the clone, it's not perhaps as optimal as say Frost domes or Volt speeding mobile drones to the objective) (Plz no nerf)

Cloud form is fantastic on Plains, too. (Is it faster than Gauss?) Really great when you need to zip over to a downed pubbie, puppy or kavat.

Nyx is great but due to how skewed enemy damage is towards players low HP compared to their own massive HP, minions that aren't warframes with warframe levels of weapon damage will never be good. Their lovely AI doesn't help much either.

Nyx is great at being 100% impervious to damage and ignoring enemy armor/shields. Too bad that they reworked her but didn't went as far as needed. Minion damage should be boosted by at least 10000% to matter, and should also work on enemies under chaos.
