I'm finally getting out of my slump and back into painting so I figured I would post a few progress pics of "De Rubrum Taurus" of Legio Vulpa that I am painting up. I'm really liking how it is turning out. Titanicus is really scratching a wierd itch with me since I always wanted to do model railroading. The bases really lend themselves to little dioramas.

So I really didn’t see anything in the OP, as far as priming/zenithal priming are there any paint brand recommendations to use? (I’m airbrushing through a badger 105 xtreme)

I don't really bother with zenithal because I like to layer colour through the airbrush but I use Vallejo grey primers. Stynlrez (Spelling??) is super popular too

Stynelrez primer for a base, then strongly consider a white ink for zenithal highlights. Smoother than a primer, more controllable. I use Stynelrez Black or Grey, then use Liquitex Titanium White Ink if I want a Zenithal work up.

So a pot of Army Painter quickshade mixing medium has just abruptly turned completely milky on me. I've shaken it for a couple of minutes and it isn't getting any better. Has this happened to anyone else? Does it just happen sometimes?

You can thin them or use them plain. I haven't done a huge amount of experimenting with transparencies but the white I use is Daler Rowney FW artist ink and is transparent but has really good coverage. Miniac on youtube mentions them in his Zenithal priming video and my main inspiration for getting more into it was this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zCwtyG35_o&t=336s

My airbrush is jamming really frequently. I have tried soaking over night and stuff. Should I get some little pipecleaners to clean out the nozzle part? It looks like the paint is collecting around the needle but the parts are too small for me to clean or really see into. I'm really annoyed it was running ok after a soak and quickly just started jamming. I wanted to lay down base colours on my repulsors and troops today

Put a couple drops on the needle and work it in and out of the brass tip. The amount of bullshit that will come out is crazy. It's cheap, works wonders. If you haven't already, Amazon AU will sell you an ultrasonic cleaner for $39, throw it in that after you've run varnish or primer through your airbrush and 99% of your issues disappear.

Got it running again after a bit of fussing, I think the main problem was the rear end in a top hat running it wasn't maintaining air > paint > air so there was paint running into the tip and anything that was in there was causing jams.

Also do I need to completely disassemble every piece or just some of it?

I bought a big set of Warhammer 40k figures, and I managed to assemble them but they look so detailed I am afraid to learn painting with them. So I went to the dollar store and got some army/fire/police men figures. I primed about 50 of them and have been just fooling around seeing what I can produce. I was using hobby paints but I got some model paints (I needed metallic colours but picked up a full kit when I was there) and I can really tell the difference! The hobby paints take quite few coats (the green army man) but the models paints look good after only one coat. I particularly like the "Golden Cowboy" I made, I think I am going to paint one of my space marines this colour:

I do two runs, one with the airbrush without those pieces, and then another run with the 'small gubbins' by themselves. It's not because anything will break, but an ultrasonic cleaner is more effective on the small parts if they're not still inside the main chassis. That being said, if you're time poor, go nuts. As for adding to water, a couple drops of simple green (non-toxic) or Vallejo brush cleaner will work wonders. A couple drops of dishwashing soap will also work just fine.

I wouldn't say an ultrasonic cleaner is really worth it. For every person that loves theirs, I've heard just as many people complain that eventually started stripping the chrome off the brush, or eating through the welds at various points. Better just to do a deep clean after a days use, and get a tip reamer to really get everything out of the nozzle.

Harvey Mantaco posted:Never heard this before. I stole my wife's though, stealing is cheap. It's probably after years if use, but it can happen. The large ultrasonics they use where I work can start destroying metal if you leave the items in for more than 30 minutes. A little home unit can do the same over the course of a year if you clean often enough. I'm not saying they're terrible, but they're kind of overkill for painters needs.
