That must be new to the remake because on the PS2 version it's that you can fail to go from 50 to 100, but you can definitely psych up to 100 early in that version.

It's in the PS2 version as well, IIRC. Early on, you'll hit 50 tension and get the message "[NAME] has reached a state of high tension" and you won't be able to go higher. Eventually it'll just give you the normal message for Psych Up at 50 and you'll be able to try for 100.

I remember this because I owned the strategy guide, which didn't bother to tell you either that you couldn't go past 50 at first nor that 100 wasn't guaranteed, so I spent several fights trying and failing to get past 50 until I went and looked it up.

also yes battle movement is pointless and turning it off gives you the DQVIII fight camera

Must be early on because I was able to hit it at around 11 or 12 the first time I hit 100.

you can do it fairly early but the chance is real low, it increases as the game goes on

it's not really worth trying for past 50 until you're like halfway through the game(though if you do manage to hit 100 early-game whatever boss you're facing will fuckin melt)

Sometimes, in a city this dirty, you need a real hero.
Speaking of DQB2, I'm on the third island and slowly building up this castle.

However, I'm kind of annoyed that the actual base area doesn't include the whole castle grounds.

Like I'm near the end of it with 2 bosses down, and I'm running out of floor space for the new rooms in to build, yet there's all of this valuable real estate just behind the throne room that, presumably, doesn't count because its not "in" the castle.

I just basically wanna repair the whole thing but the game doesn't seem to want me to do that, especially with the stacking blocks not matching the adjacent blocks.

Is there a way to control that? My castle looks patchy as gently caress with different 'castle wall' textures all over the place.

There is a workbench that lets you select specific variants of tiles, but I don't think it's available at this point and honestly that whole island is a shitshow in the first place and I recommend just packing everything up and going home as quickly as possible and then forgetting it exists.

The area behind the throne room is for the big construction project at the end of the island - I can't remember when that unlocks, you may have it already?

I actually had a bit of luck with getting two restaurants going, one in the farm zone and one in the desert zone.

They seem to build up hearts really quick, if you just go ahead with other projects in the meantime.

I'm running into some emulation issues with Command Mission, so I'm moving on to DQVI. I decided to go with the mobile version, because why not? It's one of the ones I've played the least, so it'll be interesting to see how it holds up to my memory of it. I always thought it was alright, but had the misfortune of following the juggernaut of DQ storytelling that was V.

After this one, I might skip VII and jump right to VIII. I unfortunately don't have a convenient way to play the 3DS remake of VII right now, and while I can kinda read Japanese, my skills are not up to snuff for an RPG, so the mobile port is out. I'd play the PSX one, but god, the opening is a slog in that version. And I'd honestly just miss some of the QoL additions to the remake.

I’m on my second playthrough of DQB2 and I hated Moonbrooke the first time through. The second time, I really tried to remain objective and appreciate it for what it contributes to the story as it’s own vignette.

It still loving sucks. gently caress the random invasions that can break your poo poo, that not only do your citizens not repair, but also fucks up the restore points that they DO use to repair after a battle that actually counts. gently caress these assholes for making me put my good bro in the hole. moonbrooke itself was lame, particularly because your traps were always designed to be a bit worse than the enemies that came in to mess your poo poo up act by act, but fake midenhall and the related huge plot reveal was an awesome twist

Just finished Dragon Quest Builders yesterday, and I'm excited to get to the sequel once I clear out the last challenges but... Is it important to have the story of DQ2 fresh in my mind? I remember the broad strokes from playing it fifteen years ago but I don't wanna miss out on story beats and references too much. I tore through DQ in a day right before Builders and I feel like it made me appreciate it a lot more.

Should I just power through DQ2 first? Thanks! Sub question for extra credit: Android or GBC version? I have both so that's no issue and I didn't mind the touch screen controls for DQ on Android.

Follow-up in case anybody cares: I played them concurrently and beat DQ2 while I was still in the second island for DQB2. I agree with the advice I got that you can get by without knowing the plot of DQ2 (such as it is), but I will say that it helped make a particular moment later in Builders 2 more impactful for me.

Loved both games, and I'm on to the post game for Builders 2 and DQ3 on Android. I'm already loving it! I'm sure not having to deal with monster medals this time will help a lot.

Could you put in spoilers the impactful moment? I played through DQ2 last year and watched my friend play through a good chunk of DQB2 recently. He hadn't played DQ2, so I don't think he would have told me about it.

Sure thing:

The third (or fourth, depending on how you count) island is Moonbrooke, which is apparently embroiled in a state of permanent war against the monsters. As you progress, you start getting some hints that things aren't really what they appear to be, and eventually you're tasked with going into the hellish land of Rendarak (Rhone if you're nasty). When you get there though, you see that it's the illusory castle of Midenhall from the very end of 2 that you dispel with the Eye of Rubiss or whatever.

This ties into the main plot of Builders 2 in a big way. I can elaborate more if you like.

SpiderLink
Oct 3, 2006
Yeah, that's all predicated on the thing I posted, so it should hopefully make more sense to you now with that context. You can accept the premise without having the extra little bit of knowledge from DQ2 but it does help color things a bit, which I enjoy. It's also cool seeing that bit in action and contrasting the presentation.

I was 85% ready to play DQ2 anyway so it didn't really tip the scales for me. I definitely agree with what people told me earlier though, if you aren't intending to play it, then it probably isn't worth it.

Looper

here's a pro tip that made my chapter 3 experience much less frustrating (gameplay-wise, the story was still frustrating): if you warp away from your home base when monsters randomly arrive to attack, they'll immediately run away so you don't have to deal with them breaking your poo poo

I've been playing DQ5 on iOS. Love it! But things I don't love: I'm in the post-game and leveling is SLOW, even when hunting metals. Monster recruitment is a pain. Wagon limit is also too low. I need to grind a bunch because I don't want to put the game down until I win the Catas-trophy.
