Yeah pretty much. Goons just have a huge boner for PJ Harvey or something. She is good. I'm not sure why people always post her like they doing that scene from BTTF where they hold the phone up to Marty Mcfly playing Johnny be Good though.

PJ Harvey after Rid of Me isn't that great.

It was all down hill after this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKLiU7Hq93w

In fairness, music was perfected in 1993/94, so its not a fair comparison.

I mean Green Day in on Dookie is better than American Idiot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42BBdzzgPNM

(why yes, I was in my formative teen years in the early 90's - why do you ask?)

Seriously though, I found To Send You My Love rather dull and repetitive compared to Rid of Me, but I just prefer my music a bit raw.

Let England Shake and The Hope Six Demolition Project are both masterpieces. It takes real talent and confidence to make a concept album about WW1, or the refugee crisis.

It's not as "exciting" as singing about loving but as you get older and more "wise", trying to repeat what you did before wouldn't work. Saw her live on the Let England Shake tour and she still had the energy.

Huh, I hadn't heard of either of those - the singles from Hope Six didn't grab me, but I'll have a listen to England Shake a bit later, it seems my kind of odd.

I totally agree that there's no point repeating yourself and I think she's had an interesting career, but it doesn't necessarily mean I'll enjoy listening to it.

The Handmaid's Tale is schlock, I don't like the genre of science fiction that tries to paint an unrealistically scary future to warn about some danger in the present, like 1984. They don't pose interesting questions really, just caution about bad possibilities that most sensible readers will already know about anyway, and they're ultimately not really interested in the future at all anyway. I haven't watched the series except for a few scenes here and there but it seems like just more gross torture porn.

Black Mirror sucks for the same reason, they're just crude and kind of puritanical extrapolations of how things might possibly go wrong, but you can go any way with this and it's really just as much dumb entertainment as zombie movies or survival horror dystopian videogames.

What would actually be horrifying to watch would be a purely realistic movie about climate change set 50 years from now, with no great collapse or nazi imagery or whatever but just white idiots working in offices going about their business, as things do gradually get worse and parts of the globe begin to become uninhabitable, corals dying and species going extinct. An understated apocalypse, just merely showing what we scientifically know will actually happen without drama, would work much better as a warning than the exaggerated ones you see in most fiction.

Threads worked very well because it did this just right (although the actual effects of the nukes are not very accurately represented but whatever), it shows people being people and ignoring what's happening in the background, as it slowly comes to the foreground, it shows believable human reactions ("is that for real? it's for bloody real!" is a bonechilling line spoken by some otherwise unremarkable local bureaucrat as the bomb alarm goes off, you can hear the disbelief in his voice), it doesn't try to portray some sort of heroic narrative or progression of events, it's all cold camerawork of cats getting deep fried and death toll numbers given on screen as if they're being rattled off by a typewriter in some office somewhere. It's beautiful and it's exactly what we need instead of the netflix dystopian fiction garbage.

Contrarianism is a good impulse. A good metric to use in life is: if you see anything out there, and a lot of lame and loving stupid people enjoy it, you can probably think of a good reason to hate it passionately even if it's not immediately obvious. This isn't being edgy at all, it's how personal growth works, it's how you grew out of stupid high school subculture stuff and stopped liking certain bands and started liking new ones, by bouncing off other poo poo and learning to hate it and you should never stop doing it.

The effects of technology in the long term are very unpredictable and Black Mirror exaggerates and drifts into analogy. The effects of climate change or nuclear war are knowable within a reasonable range, which is why it would make for a good documentary style frightening movie or book.

50 years? Pfffft, may as well just make a movie about life right now but have people not put on coats until late December! Maybe flash a news screen showing the Dow Jones at like 80k, but with a headline like "Dow dips to 80k for first time since 2031."

Climate change scary?.....now space dragons. Space dragons sound scarier than climate change. Let's make a movie about space dragons.

This is pretty much entirely backwards. Teenagers hate things because they're popular with people they think are dumb. As you grow up you should learn that actually popular stuff is often popular because it's good or because it fills a particular niche, and that things you personally dislike are not necessarily objectively bad and it's OK for other people to like them. Growth happens by learning to ignore the impulse to write things off just because of who else likes them or where they came from and actually giving things a chance and trying to understand them.

I mean this is clearly not true though. What you're describing is the attitude people eventually settle into as they age, but that's not the same as "maturing". Learning to enjoy literature instead of genre fiction is a form of maturing, becoming complacent and reading nostalgic scifi or fantasy or airport fiction is complacency, especially when most popular stuff nowadays is infantilizing. Being able to reject something is a skill that has to be learned and which involves being able to see what sort of emotions and people something appeals to and how it is marketed.

Teenagers do this intuitively but are usually not very good at doing it because of their lack of experience, so their early choices for what to reject and what to accept are often the wrong ones, and also because they do not have much insight into their own unspoken preferences yet, but that doesn't mean that it's wrong as a method.

In academic discourse for example being able to see why a particular literary theory is popular with a lot of people (for example: because it's easy thinking, because it lends itself to certain kinds of quickly written papers, because it confirms people's unspoken assumptions about literature), then that can help you form reasons for why you should reject it. Being able to model other people's reasons for preferring inferior stuff is how you can synthesize something new, whether that's a personal taste or reasons for thinking of something differently. It's productive.
