WGN broadcasted their last Cubs game on Saturday because the Cubs are starting up their own cable network called Marquee Sports Network. The Cubs had some or all of their games on WGN for 72 years. The Cubs nationwide popularity is owed to WGN back when they were a superstation and pretty much anyone could watch them across the country. Marquee is going to broadcast all Cubs games next year, but they haven't even started negotiating with Comcast, not sure if they've negotiated with anyone else. Looks like they want a $4 carriage fee, and I think Comcast is going to balk at that considering they're already losing subscribers. Dish is pretty much a non-starter I think, so Cubs don't have a whole lot of leverage over Comcast. Personally, as a Cubs fan, I hope the whole thing crashes and burns, even if that means the Cubs take a huge financial hit and end up sucking for a few years because of it. I am not going to sign up for cable just to watch the Cubs. That’s a great example of end game streaming. Hyper specific content for yet another cost. At this point no matter what you watch, cord cutting is about to be as expensive as just keeping bullshit cable.

It's a little different now since cable is so prevalent, hell the Cubs are probably the oddball team that had so many of their games on OTA channels and not strictly on a regional sports network. I would probably still be a little peeved if Cubs moved off of WGN for NBCsportsChicago, but at least then you wouldn't be paying for a specific Cubs channel. I don't think the Cubs are offering up a non-TV streaming option either. I double checked what Comcast would charge me for a TV/Internet package since I'm internet only right now. It's actually $10 less for me to get the combo package, but then there's like $19 in fees they don't tell you about with TV, so it does end up being more expensive overall. My gut is the Comcast eventually just negotiates the Marguee network onto their higher tier plan with the other niche sports channels.

If you're already paying for Hulu upgrading it to include live was a little bit cheaper for me but probs depends on TV/internet costs in your area. The interface kinda sucks compared to YouTube but it has pretty much all the sports channels at least.

It probably depends where you are, in my area I can do Vue + Criterion Channel + $15 wild card spot for the same price as my cheapest option that gives me the important live options PSVue does, and that's before equipment fees and the cancellation fee if I want to let it lapse for a couple months between basketball season ending and football starting. The splintering is annoying for sure, only going to get worse, and probably going to eventually coalesce into something worse than cable, but at the moment there are still advantages depending on your viewing habits and the shittiness of your local telecom monopoly
