Based on what I learned about thieves cant, I guess it makes no sense for my character to try to communicate that way for an extended time openly since it means any member of the thieves guild could get in on the scoop. But I would add one in the bar as a semi-red herring to make my players a bit paranoid. That being said, I have some cool ideas now of different ways they could use thieves cant such as through card games. This way if one of them is a rogue, they could try to gather intel in any town if they wished to.

Re: absentees My plan is to ask the player(s) that are absent if they want to do a quick Theatre of the mind session over phone/text/in person or have me make something up between sessions. This way I can have them get a new lead or hook, letting them still contribute to the party. Or if I'm swamped, I'll just ask them what downtime activity they did.

Nasgate posted:Re: absentees I think it's a good idea. In the last game I DM'd, I'd often email them with some brief downtime stuff. That way if they wanted they could keep engaged with the story, and if not then I could usually just come up with a generic explanation. If it comes down to it, there's nothing wrong with just assuming that they were tagging along with the rest of the party but "in the background".

There's the Cloud Giant Smiling One in Volo's Guide to Monsters as well which is like a Cloud Giant that's such a deceitful and tricky rear end in a top hat that no other Cloud Giants can stand them.

Started playing my flintlock pistol wielding, dex based, Forge Cleric, and it’s been pretty fun. D&D Beyond has a feat called Firearm Specialist, and then I took Weapon Master at level four to give me more martial weapons. I’ve been repairing/upgrading the ship, and crafting weapons for the crew. We’ve also established that all my spells are focused through my gun. Create water turns it into a fire hose, and the gun is used like a syringe for cure wounds. It’s a weird rear end character build, but I’m really enjoying it.

What's the simplest / easiest / lowest investment way to use a longsword as a finesse weapon, discounting the use of magic items? Just concepting out a finesse martial type (probably majority EK), but I'd like to be able to use light armor/no armor and use a longsword as a finesse weapon. The first idea that came to mind was a 3/4 level monk dip for Kensei, then making the longsword one of my monk weapons, but I feel like there's probably some other ways to accomplish this that might not be so intensive.

Just use a rapier and say it's a longsword? Or ask your DM to let you swap versatile for finesse?

I had considered just using a rapier, but I was hoping to use a longsword 2 handed with the idea I had in mind. Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of strength based martials. I don't like plate mail I guess. But going finesse greatly limits your weapon selection, more or less locking you into rapier+board or dual wielding. Eh, it was just a thought. Perhaps it's not a keeper.

If it matters that much to you, stick to Kensei the whole way through rather than dip.

The other choices are Hexblade for Cha-based swording (and Cha-based ranged attacks) or Shillelagh for Wis-based woodswording. Str is a really crappy stat in 5E and Dex is a really good stat, but I don't see why you'd not want a Rapier? The 1 extra damage from a Longsword two-handed is garbage and a board is 99% the better choice.

Just ask your DM to re-skin the longsword to a katana, assuming they havent added it in official material it would make sense for it to be a versatile finesse weapon and lose piercing. Marathanes posted:Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of strength based martials. I don't like plate mail I guess. But going finesse greatly limits your weapon selection, more or less locking you into rapier+board or dual wielding. This isn't crazy. Strength modifies your attack, damage, a single skill, and very few ability checks. Dex modifies your attack, damage, AC, initiative, multiple skills, and a rather common ability check. For what you get, dex is imo the absolute most value per stat point. It's why there's no equivalent to belts/potions of Giants strength.

It's literally just a concept / character kind of thing - optimally yes, a rapier and board would be better for sure. I was basically thinking of how I could create an agile/dodgy warrior type with some minor magic that mostly uses a longsword 2 handed, perhaps with some unarmed mixed in. The genesis of the idea was essentially me looking over at my bookshelf and seeing Lady of the Lake and thinking 'How can I make Geralt from the Witcher into a D&D character?'

The genesis of the idea was essentially me looking over at my bookshelf and seeing Lady of the Lake and thinking 'How can I make Geralt from the Witcher into a D&D character?' Well the Kensei seems fairly straightforward to me, as does simply a normal Dex-based Eldritch Knight. But another solution might just be adding in an expanded weapon set that has the finesse and versatile/two-handed equipment that you're looking for. This DMs Guild product is free and has rules for a bunch of Asian-inspired gear that could be an easy fix for you. https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/174973

It's not a finesse longsword, but isn't there a two-handed double scimitar that becomes a finesse weapon if you have the Revenant Blade feat? You even get a PAM-lite bonus action swing, on top of it being a half feat. The only catch is maybe asking your DM nicely to waive the elf requirement part of the feat.

I've gotten to play for some really good DMs, in a lot of really good games, and if you genuinely want to surprise someone: make the clue very obvious, and hide it behind a bigger, even more obvious clue. They'll be so excited for that one that the other one is basically invisible.

Our group consistently completely fails to notice clues even when the DM Speaks. Loudly. And. Deliberately. While. Delivering. The. Clue. Maybe other groups are more on the ball about this kind of thing, but nope, we have a bad tendency to ignore or immediately forget those things.

Yeah I think it's important for DMs to realize they aren't smarter than their players (4-5 brains working as a team against you). My group is pretty on the ball about the villain and his plans, secrets, etc, from context clues.

Rolling a vhuman (taking sentinel) conquest paladin x/eventual hexblade 1 as a primary tank for my party of sorcerer, sorcerer, rogue. I was playing a tempest cleric but rerolled (level 3) for a paladin with the hits and a bit more AC, also conquest sounds fun. Newbie to 5E and loving the game so far. Anyone who has used Conquest, how did/do you like it?

Note: haven't played it but based on reading it; Playing a Lawful Evil character is really fun if you go all into it. And the channel divinity power is really good. Side note: mmo style roles aren't that important, every class has abilities that let them Frontline.

after giving it some thought as much as I like Horizon Walker I'm not sure how Great ranger is even with the UA version and I might look at doing something else. It's the spell list that kills it for me, mainly, along with like half the party talking about also playing frontline martial characters.
