They wanted to have the band mix the star wars theme with something else, but they'd run afoul of copyright laws. Fair use allows them to use copyrighted music, but it's only fair use if you're making some sort of commentary on the thing you're modifying. They passed that bar by having Homer talk about star wars, but whatever they mixed it with had to be public domain
