The videos of tires exploding scare me a little. I work with high pressure ( > 3000psi) cylinders, and seeing what damage maybe 100psi can do really puts it into perspective. e: ^

In the last week I've had two of my hoses for my gauge set pop at ~300 psi or so. Loud as gently caress and all it did was breech a little 1/4" rubber. Lost my hearing for the ear closest to it for a few seconds. I can't imagine what having a tire do that would be like.

Yeah try asking a Piping HSSE guy about safe distances for Pneumatic testing There isnt one. just stand as far back as possible behind cover. Which might not be enough if a 3/4 ton blind flange fails.

For anyone wondering, this is the sort of thing you use to change a tire on one of those mining trucks: Sorry it's far away I'm not supposed to be taking pictures. It picks 'em up and rotates them around to get into position and line up the holes. There's like 20 lug bolts and the wheel maybe only goes on one way. With one of these babies you can pop the wheel off, undo the rim, remove the old tire, out the new one on, reassemble the rim and then slap it back on the truck. With two guys working efficiently you can get one tire done in the better part of a whole shift! They have six tires!

It almost seems more efficient to have a bunch of spares already made up so you can swap the wheel, get the truck going, then deal with replacing the tire. This is probably already in practice, though.

It may very well be at a place that has their poo poo together. Downtime directly equals lost profits, often costing the company more than what they would have spent to solve the problem before it happened.
