I actually disagree with the others - I've been streaming weekly for a few months now, and I'm fine with having just two or three lurkers sometimes. I think it depends on your expectations - if you go into it with the mindset of 'well, I'm just doing some art because it's the time I've set aside for art, and if anyone drops in that's nice' then it's pretty chill. Also, be aware that stream setup takes time and effort - not masses, but test first to make sure it won't be a barrier/excuse preventing you from doing it. Having said that, you mentioned mindfulness/therapy - I wasn't clear how related the art idea is to that, or if it's just what led you to the topic. If your aim is to mindfully focus on art (a really good move, it's helped me a ton with mental health stuff), then streaming is not a good idea - people chatting to you, tech malfunctioning, etc, are pretty big distractions. Digital art itself isn't as well suited to mindful drawing imo, simple tools (pen & paper!) work better for that - but then, I'm a massive luddite, I would say that.

Yeah, I've been streaming a few years, and while I found it a boost in my get-to-itness at first, it can also feel like a lodestone to "have" to do it that sorta saps some of the fun out. Also if the people watching are observant dicks, they will point out the things you know you've done wrong to rub the salt in, or plain argue with you on design choices. Don't set you expectation too high - to be popular, you've gotta put time and effort in. What the heck, I used to show my face on stream which is why I didn't link it before, but since I switched to keeping my drawing pad as the second monitor, I've been unable to get the webcam working so if y'all wanna see how this magic happens: https://www.twitch.tv/missstress I used to do daily streams, but it's erratic now. I will never do tuesdays. Latest one is my skeksona skek'Kla (I'm hoping to make skeksonas the new thing). The new dark crystal series is nothing short of incredible and I can't get over how goddamn good all the character and critter designs are.  Skek'Kla is the blacksmith. Someone needs to make all those chains and torture-devices!

I appreciate all the feedback. I have absolutely no expectations of gathering a following, especially for my art. There are far better artists for people to follow on Twitch. My reasoning behind streaming is, if I'm going to be doing this, why not stream it? Maybe I'll catch a random passerby, maybe somebody will leave a comment that helps me. Also, as far as using it as a reason to keep a schedule, that is just for me. It sorta gives a bit of a reason for a schedule, but at the same time, I will feel no real pressure to force myself to keep it. https://www.twitch.tv/pixillateme - My plan is to stream nightly at around midnight EST, give or take an hour. Tonight, I think I'm gonna try to start at 11, because I want to catch the midnight unlocking of Borderlands 3. A major theme I'm going with in this new attempt at drawing is to have no expectations, and take no critique. I've always been my worst critic, and I also held myself back because I would become far too frustrated with what I was doing. What I posted yesterday? It's junk. It's the comic strip style that I drew in high school, the style that became so stilted that I kinda lost the ability to do anything else. But I don't care now. I recognize that this is certainly possible. If it becomes too much of a distraction, then I'll certainly stop, but I do want to at least give it a shot and see how it works out. I want to be able to do something like this. Once I can do this, I'll be thrilled. edit: I cut it too close and ended up with, yes, technical difficulties, so I won't stream tonight. Some recent doodles, studies of various subjects.   Edit: And a self portrait. Haven't done one of these in ages. Enjoy it, could be decades before I do another one.  Looking at the conversation in the thread I have some wayward thoughts to contribute.Hit your canvas with your emotions. I've broken more pencils and pens than i can remember while working on projects. They're just tools, if they get the idea on the surface then it was worth it. Thinking and planning have there place, but there's something to be said about raw emotion. If you can capture that on a surface it could be your best work. The point of your smudges on the canvas is to convey a particular emotion to the viewer. To do that you need to capture your emotion and intention on that canvas. Just some silly thoughts passing through my mind at the moment. Edit: To go a step further: gently caress form. gently caress composition. gently caress symbolism. gently caress rhythm. gently caress balance. Art is the expression of emotion with the precept of conveying this vastly important thing to others. Just put your idea down without second guessing or self judgement. You'll learn as you go but don't get caught up in the nonsense of art establishment. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Edit: Get weird with your art. Don't do the same stuff over and over. Try new stuff. Try stuff that doesn't make sense to you. Try stuff that scares you. Try stuff that seems completely ridiculous. You'll find something new that will be your new thing that you love. Yesterday Today  I'm struggling, I feel lost. No frustration, just an aimlessness. I feel like I need structure. Can anyone recommend a good tutorial, or maybe even an online class, on the fundamentals? I especially would like to learn the basics of lines and sketching. I feel like I'm missing something there. I would recommend avoiding color if you want to improve your skill in drawing shapes and structure; color will just overcomplicate things for now and serve as a distraction. Using pen or other non-erasable physical media will build up good habits, as erasing will take up too much time (better to start a new drawing), especially when starting out. Also, learning on digital media will probably be slower, as there's less direct tactile feedback e: of course if streaming is helping you keep on drawing, there's nothing that wrong with staying digital other than what I said above a hole-y ghost fucked around with this message at 08:15 on Sep 14, 2019 |

  Over the weekend I drew at work in a sketchbook instead of using the display tablet. I didn't sketch shapes tonight, but I'm happy with the progress I made. I first sketched out a basic head on the left, and found I was making my usual mistakes when it comes to proportions. Then I remembered a trick I noticed from a YouTube video I watched of somebody's process of digital painting. I liked how they sketched something out, and then used the smudge tool to move things around, and straight out resized pieces of their sketch. Because why not? It looks like a mess, but it's just a sketch. So I did that, and then took it further. I wasn't trying to make eyes and a nose that look good. I just wanted to get the idea down, and try to get a face that looked like it was proportioned better, which I think I accomplished. This was always something that really drove me crazy. Looking at it now, I think I could have gone a step further and transformed the entire head, squish the height down a bit.
