it also doubles as a cheap excuse for why pretty much everything but the beds are shared. communal bathrooms, communal kitchen, communal toiletries - it's less private than an old college dorm. in fact, I'm pretty sure they go out of their way to market to college students who are used to that kind of treatment. their downtown LA location has 16 beds, but only two toilet stalls and two showers, so you'll get plenty of community there!

Real community is built by digging your own pit toilets and breaking out into a group dance and song whenever anyone uses one.

it's about as horrifically uncomfortable as my barracks in basic training which lol. Let's design this coworking space to resemble an intentionally unsettling living space that the military uses to place psychological pressure on people to gauge their stress responses (and also get them used to dealing with lovely conditions)

like theres nothing wrong with dorm rooms or barracks but lol at paying to live in one on purpose

College dorms are getting more and more expensive, the new units at my alma mater were 30-50% more expensive than the old ones, and the prices of both old and new go up ~10% each year. Even going for a 6 person per unit room in the asbestos building made in 1960 would set you back ~9k + a ~3k minimum mandatory food plan for 9 months. And this is at a state university. (Admittedly the best one with the coolest graduates.)

Good thing I spent my college summers cleaning them instead of getting laid or doing drugs. :toot:

What's the problem there? You get an hour and a half of shower time per person, per day. Nobody needs that much shower time.

It's not like everyone needs to use the shower at around the same time or anything.

but I hope they enjoy never getting a reply to a request to repair and for their rent checks to be lost constantly then all cashed at once for a huge amount that will overdraft their account, because legality doesn’t really matter and the party with more money power and time to play the long game will always win

Your checking account shouldn't be overdrawn from checks you authorized tho. If they don't cash the check it should still be a liability on your books and then accounted for. And if they don't cash it in a reasonable time you should create a paper trail documenting it in case they try to pull shenanigans like saying you are late on rent.

Also if you are smart about it they never have to know it was you. A while back I had a landlord that didn't offer recycling even though Minneapolis ordinances say they must. He was being a dick about numerous things so I reported him to the city and 2 weeks later he had recycling offered. He felt safe enough with me to bitch about it and as far as he knew the city just did a random inspection and ugh aren't these tyrants something else! Entire time I'm laughing like a maniac on the inside.

their rules explicitly prohibit putting up a curtain or any other kind of curtain

they bill it as a safety measure:

"There is security in large numbers and open floor plans, despite what some believe. The lack of privacy is a deterrent for thieves, predators and criminals because there are eye-witnesses, cameras in the common areas, and 24hr staff on site. In reality, a room is more dangerous as a villain can close the door behind them and rummage through bags or block the exit."

It is a well known fact that criminals are invisible until they are within the boundaries of someones living space. All the security they have without walls would be rendered completely useless if the staff can't watch the residents jerk off.
