The OP mentions that RS3 is where most of the goons that play these games are at. Is that still the case?

Unfortunately, there is no such game as 'World of Submarines.'

As far as I can tell.

There's a decent amount of people in each game though I believe RS3 has more active goons in it at the moment. There are some that play both though.

When I played it way after EOC came out, it was kind of there. Like many old enemies that fell to EOC balancing.

Completely straightforward, as long as you have a half-decent action bar setup and don't forget to bring restore potions the first time like I did.

You can put all sorts of things back to more or less how they used to be, change it to combat modes that basically automate the little constant ability use stuff, etc. Real nice part of the whole customization infrastructure.

I just started this yesterday. I'm still really early in, I just did the Blood Pact questline. I think I like it. It's janky and kind of ugly, but it's charming in that way. I like games like this that just populate a world with skills that interface with each other in various ways and let you go about and do your thing.

its honestly one of the better mmos for giving you choice on how you want to play your character right then. no silly skill trees you lock yourself into, no classes or skill specializations. just go do the thing!

I would advise starting slayer as soon as you can, and always try to use the monsters weakness. it'll lead to a more balanced fighter so you can comparatively do more efficiently than someone that just decides "Imma train magic forever, be a cool wizard", and start work on slayer which you'll need for some of the better monsters to kill for cash.

Yeah that's something that confused me. Why are there two versions? Is runescape 3 completely different from the original game? Do they have totally different content?

RuneScape 3 is the original game, strangely enough. But it went through so many drastic changes that a lot of the player base left.
Jagex released OSRS using a game backup of RuneScape from 2007ish to recapture all of the people who didn't like what RuneScape 2 became.

RuneScape 3 is the original game with continued development and OSRS is RuneScape 2 stuck in a time warp.

Well that's... confusing. What did they too Runescape 3 to make people not wanna play it?

Runescape 3 is the more playable of the two, but some people hate hate hate that it has microtransactions and are willing to ignore 12 years of new content and QoL updates to be rid of them.

Internet Kraken posted:

Microtransactions were one thing, but the biggest culprit was that the combat system completely changed. It changed to a more complicated version that's a little harder to get into. Over time the playerbase slowly went down, so Jagex revived a 2007 backup to get them back. And so we got Old School Runescape. It's the more popular of the 2 games. Big content updates are decided entirely by player polls that requires a 75% yes threshold to pass. So it's basically a version of the game that's controlled by the players.

Note that since OSRS was the backup, progress is completely and utterly reset there should you decide to play that version. Runescape 3 on the other hand keeps your progress. That said the post that said OSRS is RS2 stuck in a time warp is basically right. It's basically kind of weirdly stuck in time regarding story and gameplay while Runescape 3 has moved forward. It has some extra conveniences that OSRS lacks. (More accessible teleports to various places on the map. Making multiple items far more easily than OSRS' interface.)

Personally I play both, though I favor Runescape 3 more.

Also if you have membership or are thinking about getting it, it applies for both games because your account has 2 separate save data files for both games. So if you feel like switching over at some point (or don't feel like doing so), there's no need to worry about that.

Oh and OSRS is mostly free from microtransactions, but it has one item that still has it. Bonds. (Also in RS3, but OSRS and RS3 bonds are completely different items.) You can buy those in both games for in-game gold to get essentially free membership for 14 days each.

I'll probably buy one month of membership just cause I remember its only 5 bux and while that was a lot for me as a kid its pretty trivial at the moment.

I kind of just wanna explore all the stuff I never even touched as a wee bab. Like, I never once used magic and just spent hundreds of hours stabbing poo poo with a sword.

Unless you paid for that $5 membership back then, that's no longer true. It slowly rose up to $11 for both games. (If you did, your price is grandfathered in.)

They didn't. What they did was make it much easier to catch and ban botting, which removed a lot of the visible "player" base.

RSC was shut down a while ago dude, it was the original 2001-2002 version before RS2 introduced a full 3d engine that didn't rely on sprites for game enemies.

Decided to bite the bullet and just play some OSRS.

I think I kind of understand the appeal of clicker games now that I'm older and more stressed. Having something that is mentally low-maintenance but still tricks the "productive" part of my brain feels nice. Usually I like to draw since that's fun and actually productive outside of a vacuum of some fictional world, but drawing can be extremely stressful.

Cool thing about OSRS is sometimes I can just idle it in the background but can also do quests when I wanna mix things up or find treasure or whatever. Its fun!
