Jesus according to the Bible and some Catholic traditions (obviously, far from all) isn’t exactly big on the rich. A lot of Hispanic labor organization in SoCal was also run by people like this. Catholic Liberation Theology isn’t big in the US but it is in a lot of former colonial nations.

In America, at least up until recently, it's mostly been confined to predominantly African American churches, but that is starting to change. The only time it has really made the news recently though is when a few Protestant denominations started ordaining LGBTQ+ folks without requiring either celibacy or Don't Ask Don't Tell.

if you literally, actually believe in catholic theology and literally, actually have faith that following the church’s teachings are the way you get closer to god, then you do that, even if you really don’t like a lot of the church’s politics. you don’t have a choice. if a religion is right, then it’s right, regardless of what else the church is up to. I’m sure Liz Bruenig would rather the Church was leftier, but she’s not exactly about to schism and proclaim a new faith unless she believes that the church is actually theologically wrong about something. not everything people do is an attempt to operationalize every aspect of their life in pursuit of a specific political agenda, even if it feels that way sometimes.
