New England, actually. They're Jonah crabs, Cancer borealis. Might've been a few rock crabs in there too (C. irroratus). Same family as the dungies - they're the local equivalent (though a little smaller and a lot less, uh, vigorously pinchy). This was right on top of a rocky reef that we've dove dozens of times before. I'd found several up on the reef wall in about 15' of water, but seeing hundreds literally on top of the reef (probably about 6' deep at low tide) was definitely new and unexpected. We're doing some telemetry work to track them as they move around the area, so hopefully we'll be able to figure out how far off the reef they move if at all.

Was really hard for me to ID the area without seeing fish. Dungies are not vigorously pinchy compared to rocks.
