Major prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia. Ukrainian national and MH17 suspect for Sentsov and dozens of sailors that are prisoners of war. Spin on this going to be wild

You can track the flight to Russia with the prisoners here:
https://www.flightradar24.com/RSD092/220147fe

Vladimir Tsemakh is also reportedly on board, he's the Ukrainian citizen grabbed by the SBU and military from Eastern Ukraine, and is a witness and suspect in the MH17 case. He was released from prison last night on bail, and has made it onto the plane. He's not a Russian citizen, so legally he couldn't be part of a prisoner swap, so it seems instead they went with releasing him for a bullshit reason and somehow he found himself on the same plane to Moscow as the prisoners being swapped. The Joint Investigation Team just wrote to Ukraine to say he was a suspect in the MH17 case, and it appears he also hide the Buk that shot down MH17. He was expected to appear as a witness at the March 2020 MH17 trial in Schiphol, but obviously that's not going to happen now.

Looks like Putin's party took a massive hit in Moscow and elsewhere in the country. Currently, over 150 offices and personal houses of opposition have been raided by SWAT and police, no warrants, no charges, some were arrested for resisting. The Russian police state is showing its colors.

tl;dr: in theory, if PiS doesn't like the result of the elections, they could in theory use legal loopholes to keep the current parliament going almost indefinitely so that it can pass any legislation needed for PiS to stay in power, and if the opposition MPs decide to boycott it, PiS will have constitutional majority. I don't think it's likely, though, PiS will win the election by a landslide anyway and the EU would throw a shitfit over this.

At this point opposition is doing everything to avoid winning. PO shills are mostly focused on insulting other parties' electorate and threatening with economic crisis if Kaczyński wins again. SLD (which almost absorbed Wiosna and vassalized Razem) mostly tries to appeal to the progressive electorate which usually voted for PO. Meanwhile, PiS recently promised a large increase of the minimum wage, which currently is pretty low.

People who really hate him say he's a traitor (for possibly maybe creating problems for dear American friends), and people who really like him are excited that Ukraine is an influential player on international stage. Most people don't seem to care either way, though. The recent appointment of Anton Gerashchenko (one of the people behind Myrotvroets) as a deputy minister of Internal Affairs generated roughly the same amount of controversy from what I can tell.

I very much doubt that. It's more likely just because he's close to Avakov, current minister, who has influence over a group of MPs in Zelenskyi's party. There are already conflicts within the party, especially surrounding a proposed set of laws aimed at opening Ukraine's land market, so to keep some semblance of unity, concessions have to be made to various interest groups, including Avakov.

While there's an open source element to their work, it's really about making a political point then creating solid investigative work, and they certainly cast a far too wide net when looking for people they consider enemies of Ukraine.

We've just published a piece on the suspect in the recent Berlin assassination of Selimkhan Khangoshvili. The New York Times reported yesterday Western intelligence agencies believe his real ID is Vladimir Stepanov, a former police officer serving time in prison, who was supposedly released to do the assassination, but we found that's very unlikely to be true:

He didn't. He only confirmed that Ukrainian and separatist military are going to pull back from certain regions. But complete cease fire and demilitarisation are key steps in following the political part of Minsk agreements, no more, no less. Zelenskyi's take on Steinmeier's formula is more reserved than what Putin would want (i.e. to hold elections with separatist forces still controlling the territory).

quote:

A key condition for the elections to take place is for the Russian forces and Russian-backed militants to leave the territory and for Ukraine to regain control over the eastern border with Russia, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

You frankly have to be insane to inject Trump into this. Zelenskyi's main promise during elections and his inauguration was bringing peace to Eastern Ukraine at all costs, and he so far doesn't do anything that Poroshenko at least didn't try. All this stuff is in Minsk agreements.

What Putin really wanted the last couple times this was tried was a "special status" for Donbass making it into new Republika Srpska, with a veto over foreign policy. I haven't seen anything to suggest that anything like that is likely to happen this time, either.

Special status is part of Minsk agreements, and Poroshenko himself authored the law 'On special status of local government in certain regions of Donietsk and Luhansk oblasts' all the way back in 2015, it was approved by Rada, and is still in force until the end of this year. However, Russia and separatist leaders weren't exactly happy with the law at the time, so local elections that the law described never happened. The amount of power all sides of the conflict expect local Donetsk and Luhansk governments to have is going to be a hot topic for a long time, but special status itself is not going anywhere, that's for sure.
