Well, there is usually a wire around the bird's neck so it can't physically swallow fish over a certain size. Less fun for the bird but they are being fed. I remember reading that the cormorants have an understanding and ability to count how many fish they catch and will basically become ornery/belligerent unless they are fed a fish or two.

Nowadays they mostly don't even do the fishing. They pose for badass tourist photos and get paid way more than they ever made as fishermen. With the advancement of Chinese society, it was a practice that was drat near close to disappearing entirely. The cormorants are less worked this way as well. Kind of a win win for everyone.

Very E/N, but: I just submitted my 2 weeks notice! It's an absurdly stressful position that I've been miserable at for a couple years. Gonna take a couple months off and not contribute to the capitalist pigs for a few months before looking for something else. Feels good.
