This is actually a really good idea, and very cheap. As one part of a much larger climate change strategy (there is no one solution and no one said there is!), planting trees would make a big difference in the medium term.

The headline is click baity, but the article has hard numbers https://www.summitdaily.com/news/experts-plant-a-trillion-trees-to-save-the-future-from-climate-change/

Obviously he's lying about that information but out of curiosity I decided to find out what state does have the worst air quality. Surprisingly it is not West Virginia or Kentucky or any of the other major coal country areas, but in fact it's Louisiana. California is the 9th best, so it's solidly in the top 20% of states for good air quality.

The usual Trump EPA line has been to spuriously conflate air and water quality, in the sense of particulates and smog, with the environment more broadly, specifically to sort of slide climate change and habitat destruction out of the conversation entirely. It's under this framing that Trump has proclaimed himself the best on The Environment (you'll have the best air, the best water), even while doing away with pollution controls at a breakneck pace, because hey, the most visible forms of environmental damage aren't too bad right now! So this is very on brand for Trump and his administration.

Consumer choice can impact how people go vote, and how people go vote determines what policies get made.

It's like planting trees for climate change. It's a good thing, and can have a positive impact, but by itself means nothing. If done as part of a larger effort, however, it can be quite good!

Do you not understand that one person making an individual consumer choice will affect other people, hopefully spurring them the do the same, which given enough people will start a movement, which will make their voices heard, which could affect more action like full-scale boycotting, which would force the CEOs of companies to do take some kind of action?

How many people seriously called for impeachment 2 years ago? How many called for it 1 year ago? How many today?

I know that is the ultimate goal but them using the air standards as justification and then make them looser in hopes of “improving” them is the biggest republican bullshit claim outside of lower taxes mean more revenue

This isn't true though. A huge chunk of emissions comes from the consumer sectors. You have a direct impact on that. We need to do everything, and that includes collective individual action. 20% lowered emissions is huge (and, you're right, not enough by itself).

Okay, by that same logic, gun owners who lock up their guns in safes or choose not to have a gun at all have almost no impact on gun violence or suicides. Let’s ask someone who had a family member commit suicide by pistol about re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Telling people there’s nothing they can do to help and that they shouldn’t change anything is like piling the loving deck chairs in front of an exit leading to a lifeboat.
