Spatial posted:The Bradley is pretty OSHA in itself. Someone published a book years ago called The Pentagon Wars about the stupid poo poo they got up to during development, like doing survivability testing with water-filled fuel tanks and intentionally weak explosives. Even got made into a movie. It's also a pretty poo poo movie that has one famous scene but is a serious mispresentation of things. Friend of mine wrote a serious history of the Bradley program and had this to say about the film: https://yarchive.net/mil/bradley.html quote:It's a bit like the F35 in that it's three amazing vehicles in one. A tank with aluminium armour, a troop transport that moves 6 people at a time, and a scout 10 feet tall with a top speed of 35 mph. It's not a tank. An actual armor expert over on the milhist thread has a very good takedown of the film as well: quote:Pentagon Wars fictionalizes the somewhat troubled development that led to the M2 Bradley IFV and M3 Bradley CFV, and in doing so misrepresents not only the actual, historical process, but also presents entirely reasonable compromises and design choices as wrongheaded. There's a team of generals who are presented as buffons and a put-upon lead designer who has to struggle under their unreasonable demands, but, in fact, the generals are reasonable and the lead designer is an idiot who couldn't design his way out of a paper bag.

This is why I get annoying about accuracy in dramatizations. Sometimes it’s just minor poo poo, sometimes a lot of regular people walk away with completely wrong ideas about the history that they start telling everyone about and it’s a pain in the rear end to reverse course.

Nothing wrong with people walking away feeling like the military isn't using their $$$ wisely and instead are using it for bloated pork projects. We can't even audit the Pentagon because... "it's too complicated" *throws papers into the air*

Now the F-35 though. That thing is a tire fire bought about by the navies armies airforce which for some reason entered the project like 59% of the way into it and started screaming about Svotl capability like a bunch of buffoons, ruining the project irreparably.

Doesn't the Navy's Army's Airforce have its own Navy as well? (to launch the planes from) We can have an infinite ouroboros!

The Marines and the Navy should have the same relationship as the Army and the Air Force: the Marines get helicopters, the Navy gets fixed-wing. Also the main reason the f-35 sucks is because Lockheed got permission to do an incredibly stupid business ~innovation~ where they designed, tested, and manufactured the aircraft all at the same time. If that doesn't make sense to you -- like you say "wait, how can you build the aircraft before you're done designing it?" congratulations you are smarter than every lockheed manager and the entire department of defense

I'm terrified of getting stuck in an elevator, but I've always wondered why they don't all come with a little panel you can pop out along with a hand-crank or something. At most you're only ever going to be moving a half floor. Just crank and slowly descend to the nearest floor then manually open the door. Save people from spending hours or actually starving to death in forgotten broken elevators.
|
# ? Sep 25, 2019 16:25 |
|
I... those elevators are powered by engines not even located on the compartment. When the power goes out, the brakes clamp down. I cannot imagine disengaging breaks to try and hold the thing in place by hand is going to result in anything but a darwin award. I'm sure an actual technician can correct, but common sense says you're out of your mind.

Remember, elevators want to fall up because of the counterweight. You'd be releasing the brakes to let gravity move the car up, and in a fault condition you probably don't want to mess with the brakes without someone knowing what they're doing. Most urban areas in the US are going to require that have emergency backup power - at the very least battery lowering to a lobby level - so if a car is stalled it is going to almost always be because of 1) a possible unsafe condition is detected, in which case the best thing to do is to immediately stop and sit still, 2) a heat detector in the machine room indicates a fire, in which case the car stops with brakes engaged since you're about to spray water on the controls and destroy them, or 3) something is truly broken, in which case who knows what and whether it's a good idea to move the car. But don't worry, you're very safe sitting in the car and most well populated places will also require that there be a phone connection for each car that let you call out for help, including automatically giving your location and elevator car number so help can find you. Doesn't mean you won't be trapped in a claustrophonic space for an hour or two, but you're safe there. As a building engineer I've been trapped in many elevators!
