Just to make sure nobody is confused, the Russian winner (who lost her crown BECAUSE SHE WAS RUMORED TO BE PREGNANT, WHAT THE gently caress) in 2002 was born in Pskov - which is next to Estonia, not Ukraine, and she lived most her life in St. Petersburg, which is even farther from the Ukraine.

I thought there was an outside chance she was from the Ukraine when it was still part of Russia, but she wasn't.

Even if they somehow didn't I guarantee you the Five Eyes have a copy each. England and Australia won't do jack poo poo as they're run by Boris and some other chud, my money's on France or even Russia to leak a tape of the convo to stir the hornet's nest.

I just looked at a bunch of pictures of her, many of which were clearly cherry picked for an extreme expression, and none of them were more eyebrow raising than any given picture of Natalie Dormer

I used to work with a guy from Ukraine and it confused the hell out of him why people called it "the Ukraine". He said Canadians don't come from The Canada, and Ukrainians don't come from The Ukraine.

(So of course we all started saying The Canada around him whenever possible)

"Ukraine" is usually preferred. "The Ukraine" is often taken as referring to the fact that the name literally comes from the Slavic root word for "edge" or "borderland," which Ukrainians know full well is what Russia sees them as.

I get that when discussing the country as it currently exists, but it was definitely referred to as "The Ukraine" while it was a region in Russia, and I'm uncertain if it's more or less precise to do so IFF discussing the region when it was part of Russia now, in 2019.

How I saw this happening:

"Sir, the site that likes you, Gab, had its servers taken down"

"Oh, who broke into their house and smashed the servers?"

"Uh, the servers are actually in a foreign country, people just...dial, like on a phone? Into them?"

In that case, it's probably best to still say "Ukraine," because no such country really existed before the 20th century. So if you're going to be anachronistic, may as well go with the anachronism that at least has some meaning today. Before 1917, it was a bunch of partitioned regions like Volhynia, Galicia, Kuban, Crimea, etc. There was some ethnic Ukrainian identity before then, but it was never a cohesive territorial entity until the Revolution.
