Yeah, the "collective control" is basically the "do you want to go up, down, or stay level" control, there's no way to not have one.

It's like if they tried that stunt in a car on the highway and someone stepped on the parking brake.

Instead of a functional fire alarm system in what was hoped to be one of the larger airports in Europe, the airport would hire about 800 minimum-wage workers to be stationed throughout the airport with bullhorns and mobile phones. If anyone saw a fire or smelled smoke, the employee would call 112 and lead passengers to safety.

Fortunately, the government accurately described that plan as idiotic and refused to certify the airport to open.

Today the airport is still not open. As I mentioned, they've had to start replacing some display screens and lights which have been running non-stop since 2011. There is a daily train service, which no one can buy a ticket for, because the ventilation system depends on trains moving air through the tunnels. I can't find any information about whether they've installed longer escalators.

Schönefeld airport, which shares a runway when Brandenburg and was meant to be closed when Brandenburg opened, has since completed one renovation and begun a significant expansion.

That's kind of true of the large modern commercial aircraft but not in the small general aviation and military aircraft. For most of simpler aircraft, jamming the aileron or elevator controls one direction would have pretty much the same affect as dumping the collective in a helicopter. Either way you might recover with enough altitude but the fixed wing could either roll or stall out of control and slam into the ground.

They did this in an episode of Benson. They crashed in a desert or something, breaking control rods, so they replaced them with golf clubs.

My recollection from the podcast was that the person they got to architect it basically designed an efficient hub without a bunch of extra shopping bullshit (specifically excluding that stuff) and they were into construction by the time they realized there was next to no retail space on the main thoroughfares. They then tried to reengineer the layout to cram a bunch more shopping which necessitated re-routing stuff that’s hard to re-route, such as the fire suppression system and having to add floors in places.

Basically they took a building meant for one thing and tried to make it do something it was specifically designed not to do, and it’s basically the F35 in airport form.

I think I listened to the same podcast: as you say, it wasn't until they were building the drat thing that anyone who knew anything about airports go involved.

It was a complete surprise to the govt to learn that an airport is only financially viable with lots of shops paying expensive rents.

Yeah, http://www.radiospaetkauf.com/ber/ that did a really great (English) multi-part podcast about it. It's definitely the most entertaining podcast about loving up an airport (airportfuckling?) that you'll ever hear.

There was also a lot of corruption with bribes and kickbacks and such, which is how they got to the point of building an airport without involving anyone who knows how to build an airport.
