My fear though is and has always been the political calculus. Trump was right, he could shoot someone and his base will stick by him. This is what they voted for, they want a mob boss. Does that handcuff any potential congressional remedy? Maybe. The Senate remains a problem.

If Pence is heavily involved, then impeaching Trump and removing him from office means Pence gets removed too. So you get President Pelosi which would make all diehard Republicans’ heads melt.

Trump might have also involved Pence for this reason.

It would never ever happen but President Pelosi would probably make a ton of boomers drop dead immediately.

There is 0% chance of Pence being impeached if he becomes President, no matter how much Trump implicates him. Even if there's evidence that Pence also strong armed Ukraine (which isn't really his style I don't think) there's no way Mitch would ever let it happen.

IMO The most pressing threat is Trump and co baiting the media into giving the appearance that he had a legitimate reason for wanting Biden investigated by the Ukrainians and letting Fox spin up a "ends justify the means" narrative that gives the GOP cover to back Trump and makes Independents think it is all just politics instead of the worst abuse of presidential power in living memory.

This would be much easier for them to do if Rudy would STFU and if Trump has Crimed even slightly competently.

i don't think that will happen. trump is mad and won't think and just wants blood. he will make this worse for himself.

I don't either. Senate Republicans' radio silence (at least for now) seems like a tell to me. I know it's early and that some were pointing out that they may have the talking points more developed by early next week, but I don't foresee this getting any better for Trump. Could be wrong, but if even Fox News is thinking about dropping him like a hot potato, that's not a good sign for him.

Here we have:
1. Trump himself
2. Talking to another world leader directly
3. Telling him to investigate a political rival
4. Or else

It's cut and loving dry and the fact that the foreign aid was withheld and then extra was added is just... okay there's the material payment proving this wasn't just a "Haha funny joke Mr President!"

I think this is it. The offense is as simple and easy to understand as you could ever hope for. You can fully and accurately describe what happened in one sentence, and what happened was on its face (to anybody who isn't already a Trumpist) hugely immoral and, perhaps even worse, cheating.

if the republican base is starting to sour on trump it's because of angry ranting like this. one of his big weaknesses is that he sounds like a crazy rear end in a top hat. if you're tuned in to politics and reading his twitter feed it's obvious, but if you're not paying active attention and don't spend all day On-Line then it's easier to rationalize or dismiss how nuts trump is. putting tantrum video on the news puts his bad behavior front and center and it reminds squishy republicans of the obvious, that the president is deranged

Hold on, we have Trump asking for a favor, and we know Trump shut down funds, but there isn't an explicit causal link between the two yet, right? I feel like that's the lifeline that the Republicans will hold on to during all this.

Even here, the administration runs into the problem that A) there is no other plausible reason for aid to have been cut off, and B) from how hard they were apparently pressing Ukraine, it's a very clear A-B connection for the public and media to make even if wasn't explicit.
