I feel a bit betrayed. For the first five chapters Saikyou Juzoku is a cute little story about a guy reborn in a world with magic. He makes a friend, learns to use animated carved wood totems and helps bust the local magic pot monopoly.

Then at the end of the fifth chapter they spring it on you that it's tradition in the village to marry your sister.

Why? Why would you do this? There are so many better ways to make him leave the village.

Because that plot device deserves a better isekai to be a part of.

I would feel a lot worse about it if the protagonist decided to go along with this decision, but thankfully his reply is 'NOPE NOPE NOPE GONNA NOPE THE gently caress OUT OF THIS VILLAGE' and since his sister seems to be going yandere so hopefully she turns into an interesting antagonist.

I've been reading Dimensional Mercenary and it's a very good korean isekai where the MC basically soul-swaps to other people to fix their lives, and once he does he gets paid. We don't know why yet, the company is shady as gently caress and he's starting to wonder if he's working for (literally) satan. But it's interesting and alternates between "How do I solve this game-like scenario" and "What is behind this sinister company"

Dimensional Mercenary has been a decent filler between chapters of Solo Levelling, along with any other lovely isekai that pops up.

If it's tradition to marry your sister, why doesn't everyone in the village have three heads?

I think Lynn is a hack writer with a piss fetish but I'd be lying if that still wasn't a neat concept anchored to a bad story.

There is also the isekai where dude comes back to the real world after three years and realizes that time moved differently and magic people came to his world and now he has to go to magic highschool when he just wanted to be normal.

Blasphemous is a DarkSoulsVania that came out a couple weeks ago. Like many games inspired by Dark Souls, a lot of world building is delivered through item descriptions.

I can’t find the description, but one relic belonged to a guy who had a Japanese name, came from an unknown land, and was said to possess a mysterious glowing tablet that seemed to speak. Sounds like an isekai protagonist with a cell phone.

The thing is, the world is a crumbling theocracy inspired by morbid catholic imagery. The fanatical population suffers in the throes of the Grievous Miracle, a phenomenon in which sin, guilt, and all other forms of spiritual pain are manifested physically and in horrific fashion. Their faith is so fervent that they actually welcome it.

The thought of a generic otaku trying to have a breezy adventure in that world is kind of funny to me.

I swear nice bushes!
So the anime Isekai Cheat Magician just finished and of course it was bog standard. Thing is though for all the talk of like "oh man this is such a cheat", the main character is one of the weakest isekai protagonists ive ever seen. He basically just punches dudes a bit fast and does big jumps and flies a bit. And if your thinking that doesn't sound very magiciany, your loving right.

Isekai Cheat Magician is neither cheaty, nor a Magician. It's just an isekai, a bog standard one.

The love interest though, she's a magician, and her spells seemed OP and cheaty as poo poo. She's the true Isekai Cheat Magician. But the focus is of course on the main dude who saves the day and her, somehow.

The only remotely interesting thing about the manga is that the villians seemed competent and had a decent plan to corrupt the MC, but of course it was effortlessly brushed aside so i stopped reading. No idea how far the show got in that plot though

is it really just him, though? like, the weird piss stuff that crops up in Okamoto's work honestly seems to just generally be a thing with edgy anime/manga/LNs and i'm not sure it's supposed to be fetishy so much as a shock value/"realism" thing

e: i will definitely say that Lynn Okamoto's work rides one hundred percent on shock value so it being intended to be insanely gross rather than sexy would be on-brand

There is a difference between having a scene where after a monster rips a guy in hald, the closest person (usually a girl) pees them self out of fear. And Lynn making a series where one character needed to wear diapers, and his current series has women upon touch leaking body fluids of all types and being walking yogurt dispensers from their vaginas.

That man has an unfortunate passion.

yeah that's fair

the stuff in Elfen Lied came off as just him trying to be gross as gently caress to shock people, but I haven't touched his current series so if it's more blatantly piss-wizard-y in that I stand corrected

So has Dante, Aloy, a Moogle, a Behemoth, the Witcher, and in fall of 2020 Milla Jovovich. MHW is an Isekai protagonist magnet.

Rathalos is an Isekai protagonist though since it's been sent to both Final Fantasy Online and Smash Brothers. :v:
