Unsurprisingly, Penn State's kickoff at Kinnick is set for 7:30 pm EST on the 12th. That's going to be pretty tough.

Seems like every season you could just pay each player for the non-exclusive right to use their image for advertising during the next 12 months and whether you end up exercising that option or not is up to you. And whether they accept a similar offer from someone else is up to them. But yeah, something's gonna give as far as either the NCAA is going to find a way to not let CA schools do this or everyone's going to get to do it one way or another. If they let everyone do it I figure Texas will be in about as good a position as anyone to tempt recruits with big paychecks. Oh man, if it turns into a pissing contest with A&M about whose players make more money those kids are gonna make BANK.

Also, I just don't think an NFL gig is all that much better than and HC job at schools like Clemson, Bama, etc. As a matter of fact, I think it's a worse job.

Yeah well I think he's full of poo poo. He's not going anywhere. I could actually see him coming around (be it genuinely or not...) and say how he realizes that this is now an opportunity for he and his staff to further develop their players into men; teach them about financial responsibility, public perception, maintaining image, etc.

Whether you'd rather have an NFL job or a college job probably depends on your tolerance for kissing 17 year old's asses. Belichick recruiting would probably be as funny as Keith Traylor asking Nick Saban who the gently caress he thought he was talking to.

He's on record as having said that he might be OK with money held in trusts for players upon graduation or something along those lines. So it appears he's willing to consider some things, and that at least leave the door open for negotiations. The problem is that such a position doesn't jive with the people who just want to hate him so they ignore it to make the issue more black and white than it really is. I mean ultimately what Dabo thinks doesn't matter. He's not the one who will be making decisions, and I can't see him going out of his way to be the spearhead of the push back here. He does have a habit of saying stupid things on this issue that are easy to latch onto and take exception. That in itself is kind of curious because he's generally pretty savvy with the media. I think if we are being honest no one expects the California bill to be where things settle, and no one expects things to stay as they are. Where we land is likely somewhere in the middle.

quote:“But as far as paying players, professionalizing college athletics, that’s where you lose me. I’ll go do something else, because there’s enough entitlement in this world as it is.” This is an exact word for word quote. Clemson fans are such babies about people not liking Dabo lol. No one is gonna take away your national titles just because the coach is a hypocritical dillweed, I promise. MourningView fucked around with this message at 01:32 on Oct 1, 2019 |

I think there's a good chance the California law becomes a baseline for new changes. The argument they made in coming up with it was just that college athletes are the only people who are forced to let others profit off of their names and I think that's a hard thing to argue against.

Florida is already drafting their own law. Any state with a big P5 school is going to have one of these for next legislative session. Kirby was probably on the phone with the governor to get the Georgia version adopted.

LeeMajors posted:I mean, MV already posted it, but he explicitly cited 'entitlement' and threatened to quit his multimillion dollar job if players were paid. He surely did. Furthermore he's been given public opportunities to walk that back and continues to restate the same thing. My point isn't to deny or defend that position. I personally can't see how denying players a share of the wealth they help generate by risking their bodies is a defensible position. It's a fair criticism of Dabo to make. But literally no one expects him to follow through on this threat. I'm just trying to say that I think his position is a bit more nuanced that this one sound byte if anyone wanted to pay attention. It isn't the only thing he's said and I think looking at the larger context as opposed to one statement is valid. If that's not what people want to do then carry on the hate.
